I saw that Telegraph Journal posted a new article saying that the NB Museum board is hoping for an early 2026 opening of the new facility here in Saint John.

Update: The Construct Connect website updated the Museum project listing, now valuing it at $120-million. Start date is October 2024.

Perhaps the $20M listing on CCD Canada was just for the upgrade and expansion of the old museum building on Douglas Avenue, and the new exhibit space in uptown will be $100M.

This seems likely to me.

The ship carrying the cranes has docked at the new yet unnamed pier at the container terminal. Lots of people out watching it come in and take photos. Big milestone achieved!

It's a lot of surface parking. Better than new SFH builds but not convinced this is the best use of space within city limits.

I think the price was for the land and city zoning approval. Good chance we’ll see some other final products. Be nice to have underground parking and trees instead of pavement

There's no right-of-way to the airport for either, and the latter would require going through the woods (in tough terrain) south of Grandview Ave/Latimore Lake Rd, while the former would require climbing the embankment from the Kennebecasis, crossing through Rothesay somewhere, and following Route 111 to the airport. The problem there is, where do you do it? Taylors Brook?

These would be substantial projects, not just little spurs.

That's now one project on either side of the city where rail extension is key (the other being somewhere between Grand Bay and Lorneville). Interesting.

It is all speculative at this point, but there would be many options. I found this statement from DP World Canada on June 13, 2022 regarding the infrastructure upgrades to date, and future plans for Saint John:

“This significant investment is about building the right trade ecosystem to make Port Saint John the logistics hub for the east coast,” said Maksim Mihic, CEO & General Manager DP World (Canada) Inc., “By creating additional capacity, we provide more options for Canadian exporters to reach global markets leading to sustainable economic growth for the region.”

So this idea was proffered publicly by DP World Canada as well. It is now obvious they are serious about Saint John and are confident it has what it takes to succeed in the modern marketplace.

Saint John has the lowest vacancy rate in NB at 1.6%
Mind you we are bringing as many units online compared to other cities but it’s ramping up. This should give some confidence to developers.

With a 1.6% vacancy rate, and a new international school bringing hundreds or thousands of people in a few years, it’d be sensible to think 99 King, and Fundy Quay should have plenty of demand.

99 King could probably even go to to 15 stories with that kind of demand for housing.

I can agree on that. One of my friends is currently doing a reno on a house that will be rented out. It's about 20% done, still needs to be fixed up, painted, furniture added. Someone already offered first and last month's rent to secure the spot. Let's hope the vacancy rate staying low does accelerate some of the bigger projects uptown.

Essentially the idea was that the rail line through Rothesay was seen as undesirable and dangerous with too many at-grade crossings, so why not rip it up and run all the rail around the populated parts of Greater Saint John. It would then connect through the existing spurs to the rail yard leading to potash, etc. It would be expensive, but this was in the era of the “Energy Hub” so lots of big ideas were being floated around.

I personally thought it was a great idea, the devil was in the details of how to make it all connect, and the hundreds of properties it would have to pass through to bypass KV and East Saint John. I will say though, if you look at the property maps, a well-known local company bought a lot of the land on that side of the city over the years, so it wouldn’t be the hardest route from that perspective.
I'm sure I'm not the only person here who would like to see that concept design. And speaking of the area, wasn't there some gold exploration play happening around here? Or was that closer to Mispec?

This vacant lot at Somsert and Barker has been excavated recently. I’m guessing a residential development is coming.

Yeah, there's been an excavator doing work there off an on for the past two months. Wasn't sure if it would bring anything that exciting.
