Building affordable housing is like planting a tree; the best time to have done it was twenty years ago; but the second best time is now.

Is that the building on the empty lot at the SE corner of Killingsworth and Interstate?

I recall hearing about it a while back, they demo'd the old building, then it was quiet for a while and suddenly I noticed foundation work over the last month or so. Glad to see it moving forward.

Yeah thats the one. 154 units according to their website. Being on the corner of the MAX and the 72, with no parking built, this is a textbook TOD.

$12 million housing development in the works

Quote:
The design team working on a five-story multifamily development in the North Interstate Plan District received advice from the Portland Design Commission on Thursday.

West Architects is designing the Maryland Apartments for Seneca Development, which acquired four separate tax lots at 6319-6346 N. Maryland Ave. for the project. Hamilton Building Co. will be the general contractor.

As proposed, the 64,043-square-foot building will have 70 units – most with private balconies. There will be a mix of studios, one-bedroom apartments and two-bedroom apartments; some will be inclusionary housing units, architect Josef West said.

I recall seeing a while back that this food cart pod at N Killingsworth and Maryland had plans for development, but I don't recall seeing much after that. Looks like it's not only planned but almost finished when I drove by.

https://www.portlandmaps.com/detail/permit/2021-096326-000-00-CO/4737325_did/?p=R226117

Likewise, the large lot across the street at Killingsworth and Interstate now has a tower crane erected. Interstate is booming for residential, but it still doesn't feel like a hip/destination area. I'm not sure how/where, but it would be good if there was more going on on that stretch. Restaurants, etc. Seems like with all the new buildings these types of places would follow, but so far there isn't much.

I wondered about this lack of retail etc as well when I lived there a few years ago. Maybe the Max line running along makes the street hard to cross in most areas, so you just don't get that intimate, lively vibe like Mississippi.

Plus it’s not all that far from Mississippi/Williams. But as far as increase in total residential units, I bet intestate has gotta be close to the tops in the city in total adds (multi unit) over last decade. Every building is pretty big, and there are quite a few (and more in the works). Becoming an interesting drive with lots of mid rise units on each side of the road. And yet it’s not really a place people talk about, prob because it’s just residential. Interesting area.

I did see Double Mountain brewing just announced they are taking over the old Lucky Lab on Killingsworth. I like going to DM when I’m in Hood River, decent beers.

I have a question about new housing I’ve seen go in at 7334 N Atlantic. At one point, I believe I was able to search Portlandmaps.com and saw it said, “Apartments/Condos (3 or more units) Commercial Building Permit New Construction” for the site. Now, I can’t find anything about any such permits on Portlandmaps, and I can’t find anything on whether the new housing is for sale or rent or what. If someone could help find information on what’s going on here, I’d greatly appreciate it.

Good to see but too bad about the Palms Motel, one of those iconic mid century motels from the pre- freeway years. Didn't they save that sign?

It looks like they are saving the neon. That would be a huge shame if that went although someone most likely would buy it.

The placement of the sign is a huge disappointment, and I hope that is something that gets fixed in the redesigns. Having it only partly visible is a huge disservice to the old hotel and its iconic sign.

Will be interesting since they show playing fields on the lot south of Alberta, currently the front runner for new Tubman middle school.

Progress on Minnesota Place.

In my mind, it was to be prefabricated units, but appears to just be using laminated timber floor plates with (significant) steel stud framing:
