To answer my own question: they are in fact offering passengers access to the United Club. I imagine that once the central terminal construction project is done they'll switch to either Alaska's new lounge or the yet to be announced common use lounge.

I hadn't really noticed this before, but where is the 2nd level coming from? Are they raising the roof and just adding another level? What is the reason? It looks neat, but I just can't place what/why/where that will be. Is it just a mezzanine to hold seating?

I think those views are of the new Oregon Market, after check-in but before the security lines. I assume the mezzanine is to provide more pre-security waiting space, which PDX currently lacks.

I was thinking the same. I can’t believe they still haven’t created just a couple minute video what this all will look like from the starting point of entering the airport

Right now, when you go through ticketing and back to security and the concourses, you're already on the second level. Baggage claim and back-of-house (luggage handling, etc) are on the 1st level. It looks like they are opening up a portion of the first level for public use and those big windows will face West, looking out at the tarmac between Concources D & C.

The mezzanines will be above the main departures level (level 2). You can see the future floor plan about 50 minutes into this video:

That mezzanine level will have a restaurant and bar pre-security, can't wait to check it out!

In 2019, the pre-security Clocktower Plaza closed to make way for a bigger, brighter main terminal. (In fact, we demolished that side of the terminal building this spring.) When the first phase opens to the public in 2024, you'll be able to wander through the airport’s new Market Hall, which will have four retail stores and four places to grab a bite to eat or a coffee, plus a showstopper restaurant and bar with expansive views from the mezzanine. Once you go through security, there will be even more shopping and dining options on the other side.

Thanks maccoinnich for the video, I was picturing the new Market Hall as a north-south corridor like the old Oregon Market. But looks like it runs east-west, so you'll have to pass through after ticketing, with shops on both sides. Then security will be on both sides beyond the shops, and mezzanine restaurant straight ahead.

9-acre wooden roof lifted into place at PDX

Part of a $2B terminal upgrade at PDX

“It’s been really fun to watch folks. You know, these are employees who work at the airport every day, they come they go, they do their job, they hear noise, they feel vibration. And there’s that sense of curiosity, what is happening, what’s happening behind the wall,” said Kama Simonds with the Port of Portland. “And this has been a wonderful opportunity for them to step behind that construction wall, look up and say, ‘Ah, that’s what we’re building.'”

Cristine Arredondo, a VIP volunteer for the Port, said she felt pretty special being able to see it in advance.

So are they on top of the old roof? Then eventually they take down the old roof which would open up to the new roof?

Kind of... in the existing areas, the new roof should be going over the existing structure, but the entire terminal is much larger so a massive part of it is all new build. Check out the project website as it's got some graphics that show how they are moving the roof sections into place.

PDX Next...

So if it's that much bigger than before, where is it going? Is it eating into gates? Or was there that much dead space in the old tarmac next to the old terminal?

I'd like to see some construction plans of this.

The central area is expanding west. The old concourse connector has been removed (and was actually split in two and moved, with one half currently functioning as a temporary connection between the B and C gates and the other between the D and E gates). Gates C2, C4, D2 and D4 are also now gone for good.

The central terminal (ticketing, bag check, security) is being expanded 500 feet west. Whereas before you'd walk in and see a wall of ticket counters, (with market behind) looks like now they're angled the other way, with an open path to a new shopping/ dining area and then security. Some gates were lost but they added 6 gates for Southwest in 2020. And I think they'll gain a couple gates on the north and south sides when the terminal is complete.

Same question I was wondering but I think I get it now. I had no idea as well it was expanding this big. This is pretty much going to feel like a whole new airport…
