Looks like Tesla wants to open a dealership at Lime Ridge. Applying for a variance to permit vehicle servicing uses. Would replace the existing food court, which is planned to be moved to the old Sears space.

That's great. Didn't see that one coming!

Differentiates them from all the dealers on Upper James. One does not go up that way to look around unless it's deliberate. Now we'll be able to browse the mall and maybe a wander past Tesla will lead to something more.

From coverage elsewhere, the Tesla service centre at Lime Ridge Mall would be the largest in Ontario, which is significant.

Spec version of the local story. Sorry for the paywall. The rest of the article isn't long, goes into how different it is to service Teslas vs. vehicles with internal combustion engines, and what kinds of things will typically be done to the cars.

Tesla eyes major investment at CF Lime Ridge on Hamilton Mountain
New dealership and service centre requires committee of adjustment approval

Wed., Jan. 18, 2023

Electric automobile-maker Tesla is looking to make what appears to be a multi-million-dollar investment at CF Lime Ridge.

The company is proposing to convert the former The Bay/Home Outfitters location on the east side of the Upper Wentworth Street mall into a 60,000-square-foot dealership and service centre.

The addition of a service centre requires a minor variance and mall owner Cadillac Fairview will be seeking that change at the city’s committee of adjustment meeting on Feb. 2.

“It’s a fantastic proposal,” said central Mountain councillor Esther Pauls who supports the project and feels the variance will be granted.

It’s going to be huge,” said Pauls who noted work will begin in the coming weeks with the centre opening early next year. “It’s going to be a hub for Tesla.”

Hamilton Community News has sought comment from Tesla and Cadillac Fairview and is waiting to hear back.

Twenty Tesla charging stations were added to the mall in 2018.

In a Dec. 2, 2022, letter to Michael Peiser, senior director of Cadillac Fairview, Kyle Mazzone, senior Canadian real estate manager for Tesla, noted the new service centre will employ about 50 people and will be built within the existing mall building footprint.

Just as long as that idiot Elon Musk doesn't get to personally cash in on this, I don't mind.

50 jobs (to start) is not nothing, especially for an industry (auto dealerships and service) that's on the precipice of sustained decline (because EVs need far less maintenance and the traditional car dealership model is dying).

Elon is a lucky wealthy idiot, he hasn't done anything worthy of praise except SpaceX and even whether that is his success or not is dubious at best. The dude is a tool.

I mean Tesla is wildly successful as well - the subject we are discussing here. It basically forced the auto industry to get on board with electrification.

Then you can talk about PayPal, which he was integral in starting.. it's sort of a failure now, decades after he was last involved, but it was wildly impactful at first.

Elon's a bit socially inept, especially in the PR department, but I wouldn't call him an idiot. A lot of the flack he gets is because he'll take on moonshot type projects. Some land, like Tesla or SpaceX, some, not so much (Boring Company, anyone?).

Regardless, I'm doubtful he's even aware of this proposal.

The involvement in those companies has been very much overblown. While he was an integral part of them, much of the work on both PayPal and Tesla was done prior to him owning them, and as a result of the work of smart people in leadership positions.

The guy's also just an asshole. I'm fine with Tesla, but there's no denying 5 wife 10 or 11 children, alt-right courting, twitter buying to own the libs Musk isn't an ass.

The only useful thing that Musk is capable of is his face being used as my toilet paper after I take a No. 2.

Given how he wants no one on the 'left' speaking ill of him, then I don't owe him his proper respect on his terms. He earns my respect the way I tell him to, and that's about it.

Wow Elon really lives rent free in some people's heads...

A Tesla dealership would be good for the mall and area. Hopefully it works out!

I was just fine with his billionaire eccentric stylings until he started spouting opinions about the "war" in Ukraine.

His relevance is dropping fast. Tesla's might too if the competitors gain traction, as they seem to be doing. But otherwise this is a great opportunity for the mall and the city.

This is great for the mall for bringing in more traffic I believe I read there will be a showroom component as well so that will bring many shoppers into the mall some who may not have ever stepped foot in the mall otherwise. Finally the good paying tech jobs are very welcomed and needed!

Having said that I also want to just get off my chest that Elon is a real life POS, I used to look up to him now he's utter trash in my opinion. Hopefully Tesla and Elon part ways at some point in the future for the good of the company. I respect the Tesla brand and what it has done to shake up and modernize the entire automotive industry I just no longer respect the face of said brand.

Edit: two years ago my partner and agreed that in 4-5yrs time we would buy an EV and it would be a Tesla. We have since changed our minds and are seriously looking at Kia/Hyundai because their EV's are really impressive and come with less drama lol.

Totally agree, and good paying one's as well! Looking forward to seeing a swift approval.

I also used to be a big fan Stec. Was so excited for Tesla, and SpaceX. Thought of him as the best, now he's become such a douchenozzle. Still think Tesla and SpaceX as organizations are great, and I'm glad for this news, bus Christ is he such a dick bag

If you love to shit on Musk but can't name the ceo of Nestle without using google, you are neither the revolutionary nor the intellectual you probably think you are.

I'm not sure how that makes the point.

I can't name that person. But I don't recall news about them putting out the kinds of statements Musk has, or doing what he has with Twitter.

Anyway, this isn't about Elon for me. It's great for Lime Ridge and the city, and I wonder if we'll see more auto makers doing the same kind of thing as their business models shift away from ICE vehicles to electrics. I also wonder what proportion of sales are online these days... the need for showrooms may dwindle.
