You can see those strips in the renderings, so they definitely won't be covered with glass. It's a bit unclear if they are supposed to get a paint job/covering or are being left untreated. Hopefully the former.

Pretty sure those will be painted black.

I can't tell you how much that concrete bothers me...and I love brutalism.

I assumed it was going to be painted or covered with cladding, of some kind. However, in this rendering, it looks more like concrete:

I hope I'm wrong...

For this tower, I think I would prefer cladding of some kind over even painted concrete. It just doesn't fit with the rest of the design.

If the concrete stays unpainted, it will take this building from a dull (albeit tall) skyscraper to soviet levels of ugly.

Unpainted concrete can work on better designed buildings, but it will just look like an unfinished office building here. Which I guess will match our unfinished look at the independent.

From this rendering they appear somewhat darker than we see currently (even taking into account the darker lighting of the rendering). However there have been so many minor tweaks to the tower's design that I am not clear if this is truly the most current.

Based on what's going on with the east side of the building, I think you're right (my fingers are crossed, anyway). I like raw concrete on some buildings - however, this is not one such building. Future's "soviet levels of ugly" is spot on (IMHO).

I wouldn't mind the concrete close up if it was finished well, as suggested in the pool rendering, but from a distance, it adds up to a lot of concrete and is inconsistent with the finish level of the rest of the building facade.

I had nothing better to do than watch an old Austin filmed movie called Outlaw Blues...with Peter Fonda. One scene had a police car crashing into the back of a flatbed truck and rolling in front of the old Alamo Hotel. I figured y'all would enjoy this....

Is the movie worth watching? Like... if you're trapped in a cabin with no cable, internet or books but you do have it on an old VHS tape and the abandoned cabin down the road has a dust-covered VCR sitting on top of the wooden-cabinet-enclosed Quasar 27-inch color TV set?

It's available on YouTube, but it's best to skip to the the chase scenes:
  • Downtown rooftop chase
    • Starts at 6th & Brazos, on buildings where Littlefield Garage is now
    • Ends in alley between Trinity and Neches, behind The Jackalope
  • Downtown motorcycle chase
    • Starts at Dobie garage, Whitis & 21st
    • Several shots in alleys behind Sixth St
    • Drives through parking lot at 508 E 6th St onto 6th St
    • Crosses W 9th St between Congress and Colorado
    • Truck spills pumpkins on San Jacinto north of 6th St
    • Police car crashes at 6th and Guadalupe
    • Drives through the Driskill Hotel
    • Onto Waller Creek Trail at 12th St and Red River St
    • Symphony Square, 11th St and Red River St
    • Culvert under under downtown Mopac interchange under construction
  • Downtown pickup chase
    • Starts on Red River St south of 4th St
    • Ends in parking lot where Frost Bank Tower is now
  • Lake Austin boat chase
    • Blue Team blockade in Bull Creek near County Line BBQ
    • Red Team blockade in Bee Creek
    • Going under bridges in canal along south side of Rockcliff Rd
    • Ends with boat going over Inks Dam

It's not a bad little movie if you go into it not expecting too much. Some scenes taken around downtown way before the current skyscraper boom so it'll be easy to see vacant lots or old buildings...ya know before. I did enjoy watching Susan Saint James prancing around in daisy dukes and a tank top.
Funny to see singer/sondwriter Stephen Fromholz with a bit part. Ever hear Fromholz sing his masterpiece "Texas Trilogy?" If you grew up in Texas before 1990 you might relate. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pS87YWmE4Ps
