Freshii has been awful for years, seems a natural fit for the owner of Milestones.

Looks like "Loz Takos" on Broadway is papered up. Too bad, I've been there a few times. Decent fast Mexican food. It's a busy area but lots of options for food, they were never super busy.

As some stores struggle to survive the construction of the Broadway Subway, others clearly see a future opportunity. For instance, at Broadway & Willow, both Loz Takos & Bamboo World Kitchen have recently closed, but HiFive Chicken is already set to replace the former.

Meanwhile at Cambie & Broadway, Lumiere Cafe will replace the Blenz in the Crossroads Building. Down the hill Cafe Artigiano has just opened in the old Starbucks at W 8th Ave, Cobs Bread found a home in a new office building & after months of work Seaport City is close to launching.

A few shots I've been meaning to post for a while now.

Yes Bamboo Kitchen. That place took ages to open and then left quickly. I wonder how much cash they had and how long the delays cost them. Hi Five is replacing Loz Takos I think.

That few blocks is a real revolving door. Donair Dude is set to open close by, the Blenz by London Drugs was replaced by a new coffee shop being renovated now. A Japanese bakery is opening in some of the CoV's old space.

The seafood place finally opened replacing Milestones, and the old Starbucks turned Artigiano is now open.

Edit: Thanks for all the pics!

It was announced that Hi Five was taking this space almost a year ago..

So maybe they were just sticking around until their lease was up...?

I asked them about it at the time on Facebook and never received a reply.

Wow that's weird. Same franchisee maybe? Loz Takos has only been around a few years itself.

Seems unlikely, but I guess it's possible. It's expensive to pay two start-up fees. Loz Takos are in Coquitlam and Langley. They're trying to get franchise operators, but I think Broadway was also a company store. With Red Burrito and Chipotle not that far away, it's a tough market to succeed in.

Hi Five are also local, with three of their six stores in Burnaby. This will be the second in Vancouver - there's one on Marine Drive. They have five more opening, including Broadway and are also pursuing the franchise model - four of the stores are corporate. They'll be competing with the new Jollibee, and I think there's a chicken place in City Square mall too.

I went to Loz Takos a few times. It was pretty good. Chipotle is what it is and draws a crowd for sure, but their menu is limited.

Hi Five will have to compete with Jollibee now.

I'm surprised there hasn't been more of this-I live just off 4th and have to make an effort to even go near B'way since it's such a mess.

The passing cold weather took me to this dear place near where I used to work and I realised it was the construction that was keeping me away from other old faves.

Absolutely ridiculous that small business owners aren't being compensated for their losses because of subway construction. A payment of only 10 000$ would mean these businesses could survive.

I don't understand how we (as a city bureaucracy) didn't learn from the last time we went through this with the Canada Line in 2008-2010. The damage to businesses along the route was severe, those companies just died and never came back, and City Hall was lambasted for their lack of empathy and low-effort attempts to help.

You would have thought that somebody there would have written a report about how the debacle occurred - we all know how City Hall loves a nice long expensive consultant's report! - and therefore would have been better-prepared for the Millennium Line extension disruption. Apparently, little was learned, the same mistakes were repeated, and again, more small businesses will disappear.

It also seems like this time around there is way less media discussion and little public outrage is getting any momentum, unlike last time.

Hopefully, the businesses along the corridor will file a Class Action Lawsuit against the City, so that they are forced to implement definite procedures to help businesses affected by the disruption directly resultant of the City's acts. At the very minimum, they should expect massive tax cuts during construction, but ideally there should be a fund to compensate them for lost average sales, and/or a fund to equally cover their rent or leases. And/or the City should be forced to help disrupted companies to temporarily relocate - help them break their leases without consequences, or find them new locations, or whatever.

We need small businesses in the city, and watching them die due to city lack of caring is immoral.
