Last time I checked the Lougheed didn't have any road or rail overpasses that need to be rebuilt to widen the highway...

Back in the early 90s I blew a tire going over a steel plate on West Georgia, and I wasn't going anywhere as fast as the speed limit. I see that plate as practically weaponized. Did the extinction protestors put that thing up?

OMG, that's painful - especially knowing how much further those guys have to go (and how much more waiting is in store for them) before they get to the bridge. I can't imagine sitting in traffic like that, I'd just pull over and go have dinner or read a book until the whole mess cleared up.

Great news for Maple Ridge / Mission, but any word on widening of Fraser Highway through Langley township / Abbotsford. The backups through that area can be multi km long

Phase 1 of work is supposedly already under construction. Plans to widen Fraser Highway beyond Langley (outside Metro Vancouver) are the responsibility of Abbotsford. "The project will help reduce traffic congestion and enhance public safety on Fraser Highway, between Mt. Lehman Road and Station Road. The first phase will involve intersection improvements and centre-left turn lanes at the following strategic intersections: Lefeuvre Road; Bradner Road; Ross Road; Stevens Street; and Pinegrove Street." The plan to widen to four lanes are currently to carry out the work in two phases, in 2025 and 2030.

Work to repair pothole on Ironworkers' Memorial Bridge to begin this week
B.C.'s Ministry of Transportation says most of the work will be done underneath the bridge to reinforce the deck with rebar and concrete.

Work to repair a large pothole on the Ironworkers’ Memorial Bridge connecting Vancouver and the North Shore is set to begin this week.

On Tuesday, B.C.’s Ministry of Transportation said structural engineers have assessed the pothole at the northern end of the southbound centre lane and have figured out how it should be repaired.

The ministry says it will involve work underneath the bridge to reinforce the bridge deck with rebar and concrete. This requires a large amount of scaffolding for workers to reach the site, and the use of pneumatic tools to prepare for the repair.

Work will begin this week, the ministry said, with most of it happening under the bridge deck. Any work on the bridge will be limited to night-time work to minimize traffic delays.

The ministry expects the work to take place throughout the week and potentially into next week due to the time it takes to cure concrete in colder temperatures.

While the work goes on, there is a steel plate on the bridge deck, and ministry staff said it is safe to drive on.

The pothole has caused lengthy traffic delays on the bridge.

I crossed the Iron Workers yesterday and the plate wasn't fully secured and rattling every time a vehicle went across. Wasn't super confidence inspiring.

They're installing a larger plate tonight during road closures which include removing some more concrete/steel reinforcing. I assume they'll remove some of those other patches and fix it all at once. It seems like the plate is held down by chains and those bolts are just connected to those chains. Probably not a good idea to drill into the concrete and create more possible crack points.

I mean there's some problem joints where you can see previous patching but unless there's some serious structural problems below the deck it's not int that bad shape.

There was corroded rebar that failed, unfortunately rebar can't be maintained without removing the surrounding concrete.

Some of the rebar under the road surface has corroded and failed, Drummond said, so crews have had to install scaffolding under the bridge deck and do nightly lane closures as they put new reinforcing steel and fresh concrete back in.

Drummond said they are planning to install a new, larger temporary steel plate on Wednesday night and pour fresh concrete on Thursday. The weather forecast indicates conditions will be fine, Drummond added.

The new plate coming in is about a quarter of an inch thicker than the existing one, but it has tapered ends so it shouldn’t be too jarring to drive over, Drummond said.

I heard the other day some of the bolts were raised and causing havoc on car tires as they went over it. I was stuck on the north shore last week when it became a problem, which was wednesday, so we stayed for dinner and eventually got back over around 9 pm.
