Is former Philly Mayor Michael Nutter running again?

WHYY reporting:
A familiar name may be joining the crowded field vying to be Philadelphia’s next mayor.

Sources close to former Mayor Michael Nutter have confirmed to WHYY News that he’s been asked to consider running for a third term as mayor.

The city charter limits mayors to two consecutive terms in office, but it doesn’t prevent a former mayor from running for a third term after taking a term off.

Democratic Party head Bob Brady said if Michael Nutter wanted to run for mayor again, he could. It’s possible he’d run, Brady said, but not probable.

“He has a right to run,” Brady said. “There’s also a draft movement out there to have me run for mayor and I told them to forget about that. That isn’t happening.”

Brady said the move makes it appear that people aren’t happy with the current field of 10 candidates and are looking for another candidate to join the field.

Public relations executive and Philadelphia elections expert Larry Ceisler said Nutter has one important quality many of the other candidates in the field don’t: name recognition.

“It’s a field of candidates that has little or no name recognition. And that can be, for a number of reasons, that nobody knows who they are,” Ceisler said. “Somebody with the name recognition of Michael Nutter, if they came into the race and I believe Michael would probably be able to raise money and whatever, he would be an odds-on favorite to win.”

Ceisler said a combination of name recognition and cash to pay for advertising is key in a primary election with 10 or more candidates. Many of the candidates are probing strategies where they would only have to secure 20% of the vote to win. In a low turnout primary, that might represent only 10% of the electorate.

Brady cautioned people not to talk to anyone about dropping out in the race, and he promised he would not be speaking to anyone about doing so himself.

Nutter is reportedly out of the country and unavailable to comment.

The media tends to find the most outraged in the black community and then give them voice as representatives of their people as if we are monolithic. Nothing Nutter has ever said about crime or who has been committing crimes etc has offended me or the people I know. If he wasn't term limited he would've won a third term. Not everyone black loved Nutter (same would apply to any mayor) but I guarantee you almost all black citizens took him seriously or had some respect for him.
+1. There’s some weird notion with telling the truth as being a bad thing & that always hurts the community more then anything else that people are trying to do to improve things, a big step would be to accept whats going on & fix it. Not try to mask it & get mad at people telling it as it is. Nutter had the city on point, Period.

His programs worked & his method got the job done, lets get back to getting the city back on track, so it can blossom even more then it has been.

Theres two issues that are holding Philadelphia back from being greater.

#1 Crime
#2 Poverty

Get those issues in check & no one can say shit about the city again.

Agreed. Nutter was great at calling out social issues that were (and are again) plaguing the city and going to communities as a respected and trusted leader and speaking out. Rebecca Rhynhart is my favorite for getting the city's nonsense sorted out, but there is a lot she can't do as directly due to the optics to be honest. Nutter was also still good at reforming corruption when it was even worse. If he does run, I think honestly he would win. People here remember what it was like before and after his tenure, the improvements of which were hugely squandered by Kenney. I think many people took Nutter for granted, but Kenney has been a very stark contrast between someone who cares and is a city booster with someone who doesn't give a shit to even show up. We've been pretty lucky to have been coasting on momentum for the last several years, but the next election is important as that momentum could run out as the economics get tough.

Even if he doesnt get it I do think that the fact this draft movement is happening is sending a message to the field- they need to come with a Nutter like attitude and platform to get the support they need from the business community and others who can help with fund raising. I think it sends the message that MANY people felt we were on a good path before Kenney and there is a desire to go back to what was working.

Happy New Year, everyone! Since people have already made their predictions about real estate development, I'm going to do something slightly different and make some predictions about air travel to and from Philadelphia. Here are my predictions for PHL, from most likely to less likely:

-American its first deliveries of the Airbus A321XLR, along with additional deliveries of Boeing 787 variants, will be a game-changer for international travel from PHL.

-Several domestic routes cut during the pandemic will be restored (ex. Portland, OR).

-American will resume serving Central European destinations cut during the pandemic, such as Prague, using Boeing 787s.

-American will officially launch its Philadelphia-Casablanca route announced prior to the pandemic using Airbus A321XLRs, granting PHL direct connectivity to North Africa

-American will launch a new Philadelphia-Mexico City route.

-American will begin serving new Central European markets, such as Bucharest and Istanbul, using Airbus A321XLRs.

-American will begin serving new Western European markets, such as Manchester and Munich, through its Airbus A321XLRs.

-Delta will expand its capacity from PHL to its hubs.

-American will start serving Tel Aviv, resuming the former US Airways route.

-The Spirit-JetBlue merger, should it be approved in 2022, will increase service at PHL.

-Air Canada will launch a Philadelphia-Vancouver route.

-American will begin serving certain Central/South American destinations from PHL, including San Juan (Costa Rica), Panama City, and Bogata.

-A new international carrier will call PHL home.

-PHL will announce a long-awaited route to Asia (maybe Philadelphia to Tokyo on Japan Airlines due to its Oneworld membership?).

Saw this photo on Reddit and thought it captured a few of the new buildings in Center City and Schuylkill Yards nicely. Got to love the urbanity of Philadelphia

We won't see any XLR routes until 2025. I doubt they will be delivered to AA until mid to late 2024

If AA can find a better slot time for Mexico city they should relaunch the route otherwise no.

AA is currently doubling down on the current international market, maybe in a couple years time AA can try new routes.

Delta and United never does anything here. The only thing I see is tiny frequency increases.

We should see about JetBlue and Spirit, initially I see no change in service.

AirCanada I hope we see more from them

As for an Asian flight, once we have more cargo facilities I can see new flights

Quite a list!

I could see American resuming central European destination. United from EWR is resuming Prague in May, I imagine PHL or JFK to Prague are on American's radar.

A PHL to Asia route is very much needed, Philadelphia is the only major Northeastern city without a direct link to Asia.

And while frustrating, I don't see Delta or United introducing new PHL routes...

To redeem the Roundhouse, make it the anchor for a new, affordable neighborhood

Quote:
Because the Roundhouse is the city’s most visible symbol of police misconduct, the Kenney administration believed that its history needed to be aired before the building could be put on the market. Over the last several months, a team of consultants — led by Connect the Dots and Amber Art and Design — has been holding meetings with a variety of people, including those impacted by police misconduct and those who worked in the building. The consultants have also spoken with architects and preservationists. Their findings, due in late January, are intended to help determine the building’s future — whether it should be sold to a developer, used to advance social justice, or simply demolished.

The Preservation Alliance and Docomomo, which just filed a nomination with the Historical Commission to make the Roundhouse a city landmark, argues that the building is really an example of a different architectural style, Expressionism. Like the gestural scrawl that animates the paintings of abstract expressionist Jackson Pollock, the Roundhouse’s voluptuous curves create a sensual effect as they shimmy along Race Street. The Roundhouse can be seen as a modern interpretation of Rome’s undulating Baroque facades, which did so much to shape that city’s streetscape.

To help people reimagine the building, the Preservation Alliance commissioned a set of renderings from architect Anthony Bracali, showing how it could look cleaned up and redeveloped. Bracali started by taking down the fence and reopening the Race Street entrance. He also replaced the solid panels on the ground floor with windows, recreating the transparency Geddes intended. The transformation is dramatic.

Because the city is selling the whole parcel, Bracali also wanted to illustrate what could be built on the Roundhouse’s 1.5-acre parking lot. The lot is easily big enough for a high-rise residential tower — or two. But in case market conditions don’t support a tower, Bracali included a rendering that shows a large mid-rise wrapping around the old headquarters. Bracali recommends a walkway separating the Roundhouse from the new residences, to avoid compromising its distinctive form. A developer should be able to offset the renovation costs by taking advantage of the high-rise zoning.

Rather than simply sell the property to a developer, as the city did with the historic health center on South Broad, it should first prepare a plan to transform Franklin Square into a new, equitable neighborhood, one that includes substantial affordable housing. With its striking round form, the Roundhouse could anchor the development, just as the mid-rise Bulletin building does at Schuylkill Yards. The subsidized apartments wouldn’t necessarily have to be in the Roundhouse.

Business community and Nutter. There is one guy they interview who is really ripping the business community for being unprepared for this primary and I agree 100%. Hes's basically saying they are grasping at straws because they didnt have a plan in place to align behind a candidate that met their needs. They are very concerned about Gym winning because of the fractured field.

If they can’t get him to run, they really need to push hard to rally around one “anyone but Gym candidate” and start disregarding the others. That’s the only alternative strategy that could work.

Or we could have ranked-choice primaries like any civilized society should.

I think several council members and others were trying to get it passed last Fall but I’m not sure if it went anywhere or if it would even apply to the upcoming election. Would be nice if it did though…

If that woman wins the primary, then I don't what to say about Philadelphia...
I guess 8 more years of the same or potentially worse? A lot of self-righteous uber progressive nonsense at the expense of everything else...

The other candidates need to get out there and make noise.

It’s sorta amusing to read between the lines… There’s a lot of people who obviously don’t particularly like Gym but they’re euphemistically saying “the field is too crowded” which actually translates to “We’d be happy with 5 or 6 of the candidates winning, but Oh God we just did internal polling and it appears Gym has consolidated the far left vote and is ahead!! Someone call Nutter!”. Nutter probably doesn’t care for her either and I’m guessing saw some recent internals - hence the out of the blue news that he’s somewhat considering running again.
