As you said, there is now a big Latin American presence here. I notice it on the bus, at the shopping centres, and just about everywhere.
You once remarked, a number of years back, that the O&D traffic between Vancouver and Brazil was surprisingly high. Do you think we might get GRU? Or if not, then maybe BOG or LIM? It would be thrilling if Vancouver became a 5-continent airport. Do you think this is possible? If yes, how much time do you reckon before a route to South America happens? Or is it off the table for the foreseeable future?

ALASKA AIRLINES REVISES PORTLAND OR – VANCOUVER SERVICE IN NS23

Alaska Airlines earlier this month continues to revise planned service resumption on Portland OR – Vancouver route. Latest service resumption is now scheduled on 15JUN23 at earliest, while overall service will be reduced from 7 to 4 weekly until 05SEP23.

This route is operated by Skywest Airlines Embraer E175 aircraft.

DELTA INCREASES SEATTLE – VANCOUVER SERVICE IN 3Q23

Delta in the 3rd quarter of 2023 plans to increase Seattle – Vancouver service, returning to pre-pandemic level in 2019. From 10JUL23 to 04SEP23, the airline will operate 7 daily flights with Skywest Embraer E175 aircraft, instead of initially filed 6 daily.

3x daily according to AC press release

So likely they'll add a third daily sometimes early next year?

Also the PR says YVR-YLW increase to 8x daily, but it's still 7x daily on their schedule. Either YVR's schedule is not completed yet (more likely), or they made 2 mistakes on their press release (less likely).

I know the AC release said that, but think they changed already (I bet the original press release was based on the CR9 schedule, which would have been 3x daily). I appears AC has settle on 2x daily 737s instead. It is a huge in capacity actually. 3x daily 737 would be shocking, and unwarranted. That is too much capacity for AC on YVR-SAN, one day maybe, but not this summer.

Yes. Who knows though. It took them over a month to extend IAH to year round after that was announced.
AC transborder next summer is going to be huge as capacity shifts to YVR.
UA has currently allocated 11 daily to YVR (all mainline) with the core 6 routes - EWR, ORD, DEN, IAH, SFO and LAX. Still very early for their summer scheds to be finalised. I would expect a flight to IAD by either UA or AC will return too.
Delta now at 10 daily to SEA, MSP and SLC - I would expect a return to ATL and JFK are on the cards too.

Maybe the third daily is a CR9... the extra YLW might also be a CR9. I guess they haven't finish the CR9 schedule yet? After all, the flights from YYC were just removed from schedule not long ago (it was zeroed out previously), so it will take them some time to redeploy.

Everything else in the PR reflect the updated schedule, some were at the same time or after the SAN changes (such as 2x daily EWR).

I'm still think YMM is a possibility for the CR9, maybe FAT? Not sure if anything would come out of the route development meeting with the FAT authority...

Also, with China opened up, not sure if AC have spare widebody lying somewhere to increase service? Might be too late for S23 though.

Likely fly back empty.

HU operated one way SZX-YVR for over a month before open the reverse direction for reservation. I remember MF and CA also operate unequal number of flights for each direction for some times... and CX had operated as much as 4x weekly to YVR, but 1x weekly back to HKG for a few months too. Pandemic and government restriction can make airline do weird scheduling...

But things may still change quickly though, as China just announced reopening 2 days ago.

Note that the plane will remain at YVR for over 24 hours. This is in line with all Chinese flights right now (likely the same crew operate both directions).

[EDIT] Looks like reservation is now opened from March 27. Earlier flights are still in the schedule though.

Currently China Eastern Airlines is still operating Cargo flights on Shanghai PVG-Vancouver YVR -PVG on Airbus A350 plane

They easily can accommodate passengers on it too (eventually).

Is Air Canada still doing the stop in Korea to swap crew? You would think they could switch back to non-stop once China gets over the current COVID peek they are having and it becomes safe for crew to overnight in China.

AC stills operates via ICN to PVG, and that looks to continue in the summer. I personally don't count destinations unless they are non stop (even if they are "direct"), so consider PVG "unserved" since COVID. Glad to see MU back, even for once a week, to give us a non-stop to PVG. I used to be so proficient in what Chinese routes were operated from YVR, but since COVID I am totally lost, the service has just changed so much. I don't even count them anymore in terms of projected # of flights, it's just so minor now it doesn't even belong in the flight/destination discussions. There's been growth and commitment by so many carriers to YVR, but the flights to mainland China are just too tenuous to really count on right now. And personally, I don't want the plethora of mainland destinations to come back if it costs us SIN, DEL (by AI or AC), or BKK. SIN especially, I want that one held at all costs on SQ, it's worth a lot to have them at YVR and we've been burned before, so really hoping the route is in for the long haul (so to speak).

Interesting read since I have been wondering how much luggage theft may have occurred since the chaos last week. International arrivals is likely secure for your luggage to sit even for days, but the domestic side is just way too open for today's world.

CHINA EASTERN RESUMES VANCOUVER PASSENGER SERVICE IN 1Q23

China Eastern in late-January 2023 plans to resume Shanghai Pu Dong – Vancouver passenger service, scheduled with Airbus A350-900XWB aircraft. The Skyteam member plans to operate this route once weekly from 23JAN23.

Following schedule is effective 23JAN23 – 06MAR23.

China Eastern previously operated Vancouver passenger service from Nanjing until May 2021.
