Here’s another antidote: I visited a film festival in Manhattan a number of years ago. When I mingled with other attendees, their whole demeanor would change the second I’d mention I’m from Salt Lake. Every single time. It was like I was suddenly an alien. After the same encounter over and over I just started saying I lived in Denver.

Ignorance, stupidity and bigotry cut across political lines. East coast people I find to be some of the most uneducated about anything other than the East coast and California.

I think those living more in the CBD and East Central neighborhoods could certainly benefit from a little more public space though.

To the idea of closing 200 W, that would be terrible for the Capitol Hill neighborhood. This is the main egress to downtown for the residents of the area so we don't have to deal with all the traffic on 300 W or West Temple.

There is SO much potential around downtown for dozens of pocket parks. A modest budget would go far. Then again terrible idea without modification to the parks/alcohol laws.

Rocky's zoning was a failure and poorly thought out, which is why the city council refused to approve it for so long.

Also, you did NOT link to the 2005 proposal. You linked to a very vague Deseret News article.

It was only a failure because Becker did absolutely nothing to follow through during his first five years in office.

So, I'm glad we're in agreement that Becker is to blame here. He failed to act for five years of his time as mayor. Rocky got the ball rolling and Becker decided to just stand firm until he was into his second term and realized doing nothing wasn't going to keep moving the ball along.

This isn't hard, my man. Now take your L and move along. Conversation over.

Oh, I completely agree. I think the lot on the corner of 200 W 300 S adjacent to Valter’s is a prime example.

Could someone give me a quick refresher on all the larger scale proposals in the pipeline? My dad is starting to get interested in some of this development stuff and I wanted to give him a quick rundown on how different we'll be within just the next five years or so. He's a small business owner and he came to the conclusion that it would be helpful to learn more about how Utah's population/demographics are changing and growing and whatnot. I know projects specific to downtown are just a small piece of the pie but it's a good concentratd visual representation of the change going on all over the state. Thanks!

Becker spent two years developing a winning zoning ordinance, unlike Rocky who slapped something together in short order, which failed. Becker started working on it in 2010, less than two years into his term, not 5 years.

Nah. I like my response better. This site goes through pages and pages and pages of non development trash, le tures about how other sites that are actually focused on posting development arent, and when someone asks for a rundown of whats going on, the response is first of; nothing, and then to look back over the umpteen pages of trash to find something outdated and old. And i look forward to the self righteous bs to this response vindicating my point once again.

The Block D buildings look like 375 ft placeholders to me. My guess is that portion of the project is still amorphous.

Are there any renderings for what Hines will do with the South Temple Tower? I totally forgot about that one.

Also since the year is coming to a close, lets hope we get most of these proposals off the ground and maybe get some more new proposals. 500+ footer would be appreciated. Can’t wait for 2023!

Really hope we see both of these built. Main Street seems pretty likely but APS has been vacant forever. The company had 18 months to do something with the property and still nothing… That 18 months was in like 2016.
