I just saw on Facebook that the old Telegraph Journal building on Crown Street is for sale for 1.9 million. Would be a great spot for a new apartment building or fix the building for some offices

Funding was announced this morning to re-align Retail Drive.

https://www2.gnb.ca/content/gnb/en/news/news_release.2022.12.0682.html

Quote:
"Provincial, federal and municipal government officials have announced more than $8 million in combined funding for upgrades to Retail Drive in Saint John.

This investment will raise a section of the roadway where we have seen persistent flooding and will help support expansion of the East Point shopping district by reconstructing a section of Retail Drive,” said Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour Minister Trevor Holder. “This project is a great example of how investing in infrastructure and climate adaptation projects can lead to improved safety, as well as economic growth.”

Holder spoke on behalf of Réjean Savoie, minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation.

The project involves reconstructing a section of Retail Drive and upgrading storm and sewer piping to accommodate the expansion of East Point. The street will also be aligned with Ashburn Lake Road to improve traffic flow.

“Working with our partners, our government is focused on making infrastructure investments that improve the lives of everyone in Saint John-Rothesay, and all New Brunswickers, and help us protect and develop our economy,” said Saint John-Rothesay MP Wayne Long. “A safe and functional road like Retail Drive, a major corridor to East Point, ensures that residents and visitors of the city of Saint John can safely benefit from the growing retail centre.”

Long attended for federal Intergovernmental Affairs, Infrastructure and Communities Minister Dominic LeBlanc.

The provincial government is contributing $2.4 million to the project, the federal government is investing $2.8 million, and the City of Saint John is providing about $3.2 million.

“Investments in critical infrastructure help mitigate the impacts of climate change for all Canadians,” said Mayor Donna Reardon. “Upgrades to underground infrastructure and the realignment of Retail Drive will help mitigate the risk of flooding and major weather events due to climate change. It will also enhance public safety for pedestrians and motorists, and the work helps pave the way for future growth in the area. Thanks to funding from our federal and provincial partners, the city can now proceed with this important project.”

The project will also include the addition of sound to pedestrian signals, accessible ramps, and railway crossing gates and traffic signalling for improved safety".

The project will reconfigure the intersection at Rothesay Ave and Retail Drive. Total funding is $6.9 million, ($2.8M from federal, $2.3M from the province and $1.8M from the city).
Will this eliminate the double light situation outside of Deluxe?

In the news about Retail Drive realignment, they mention this will support "East Point Shopping District's future expansion". I'm assuming they are referring to that proposed mixed-use apartment buildings with ground floor commercial that's supposed to be built in the big undeveloped area of the shopping center?

Also in the article from the radio stations it mentions: https://www.country94.ca/2022/12/05/8m-to-raise/

Quote:
"Tim O’Reilly, the City of Saint John’s Director of Public Works and Transportation, said the two intersections in this area on Rothesay Avenue will become one.

“It’s very difficult for people to get through now. It creates inefficiencies and issues for people so that’s the biggest improvement. [We will] get those intersections lined up, have a new section of Retail Drive built up to the East Point development site,” O’Reilly said".
He mentions there will be a new section of Retail Drive built up to the East Point area. Wonder what all of this will look like, hopefully some diagrams will be released soon.

Safe to say Westmoreland Homes is getting the boot from the area but what about the homes? Looks like you’d have to wipe out atleast 4 homes too.

Interesting one item agenda for a 2-PM Common Council meeting. Must be the museum or the south end school.

The meeting lasted about 1 minute and they did not say what the project was.

It’s got to be a big project or something and they are keeping it a secret so it would be a big announcement or something. She wouldn’t give any info or details and said she would have to say “no” to any possible project you list to her.

It has to be the school - that is the only "land assembly" project I can think of - this has been the biggest gong show in recent memory - Saint John needs this and needs it NOW

EXCLUSIVE: Province Eyes Rainbow Park Area For New School
Quote:
”It appears the new school planned for Saint John’s south-central peninsula may be built in the area of Rainbow Park.

A report obtained by our newsroom sheds new light on the potential location of the highly-anticipated K-8 school.

Saint John council held a special meeting Tuesday afternoon with “land assembly for a provincial project” being the only item on the agenda.

Council unanimously approved a motion to “enter into a revised financial contribution agreement to support the project.”

But no other details were provided during the two-minute meeting, including the name of the project or what land is involved.
After requesting more information from the city’s communications office, a spokesperson provided a copy of a report presented to council in Committee of the Whole earlier in the day.

Province looks to buy St. James Street properties

That report shows the province has to buy two properties at 98 and 102 St. James Street to “complete the land assembly for the new school in the South Central Peninsula.”

Both of those properties, located between Charlotte and Sydney streets, back onto Rainbow Park, according to property records.

The province is also paying $127,000 for three unidentified properties owned or controlled by the city as part of the land assembly.

During a previous meeting on Nov. 28, councillors approved a pair of “financial contribution agreements” with the owners of the two St. James Street properties amounting to $90,000.

The city would pay $40,000 to the owners of 98 St. James Street and $50,000 to the owners of 102 St. James Street, in addition to what the province pays them for the appraised value of their properties.

Negotiations stall with one landowner

However, negotiations between John Correia, special advisor to the premier, and the owners of 98 St. James Street “reached an impasse,” according to the report.

“The landowners have indicated to Mr. Correia that they do not feel that the total compensation being offered is sufficient,” said the report, written by city solicitor Jacqueline Boucher.

“The property owners do not feel it is sufficient to compensate them for the renovations they have completed on the property and the rental income they will lose upon the sale of their property to the Province.”

Correia told city staff that he is hopeful the landowners will accept the province’s offer if the city increases its financial contribution to $55,000, which council agreed to do on Tuesday.

“The urgency of this matter is because the Agreements of Purchase and Sale for the property, as received from the Province, must be signed by December 8th,” said the report.

Province mum on site selection process

The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure has yet to make any official announcements about site selection for the new school.

Alycia Bartlett, the director of communication for the department, told our newsroom Tuesday that there were no new updates at this time.

The province set aside $2.2 million in this fiscal year’s capital budget to acquire land for the new school, which will replace Prince Charles School on Union Street and St. John the Baptist/King Edward School on St. James Street.

More money has also been earmarked for “development work” in the 2023-24 capital budget, which was unveiled on Tuesday, but Finance Minister Ernie Steeves offered no other details”.

98-100 St James is quite well maintained. I wonder how difficult it would be to move to a nearby vacant lot instead of demolishing?

So this went from being completely "secret squirrel" to knowing everything overnight. WHY is this taking so long and why are Council and Province not being completely transparent with us?

The province posted a press release today. In it they mention that part of this year's budget is funding, ($5.5-million), for three new projects including a replacement for Hazen White-St. Francis and Centennial schools.

They also mention that four projects at various stages of planning and construction will continue including "the design of a new kindergarten-to-Grade 8 school for Saint John’s central peninsula". https://www2.gnb.ca/content/gnb/en/news/...VnXYaRo7mDmc0gE886TYBHn_Q1R-dFuL0SBycQCQ

Statement From the mayor regarding the council meeting.

I have received a statement from Mayor Reardon regarding the city council meeting yesterday about the land for the province. In it she says the report that was leaked contained information that could change and the leak was unacceptable. I'll post a link to the statement. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1-0IMDHial_wHlQgTvDBmcMoXxibltmWM/view?usp=drivesdk
