We all know those flights aren’t going to fill just with O&D
I believe JAL and WS are codeshare partners? They may well still end up competing with each other.

They also have a number of destinations from YYC that are simply not served from Vancouver. So if your going to Rome or Barcelona you need to connect somewhere.

Code-sharing is one thing… still competitors.
Yes 2 - BCN and FCO.
Icelandair will give them a good fight for bums on seats.
Plus all the other one stop options.
All in all good news for YYC all these new flights. Now let’s see how well they do.
That’s a pretty big expansion all at once

WS just enhanced its codeshare with JL and began selling tickets for JL's YVR-NRT on its website a few weeks ago.

EDI isn't served from YVR either.
FCO preformed well for them this past summer, and already has decent advance bookings for next summer.

I'm going to assume the "continued from winter" next to CDG in the presser basically confirms the route has been extended to year-round.

Forgot about EDI already. Silly.

Be curious to see what AC’s next move is out west.

Congrats to YYC.

Shouldn’t be hard to fill these flights and make money in peak summer season. These are slam dunk destinations, so to speak.

Glad YYC got Asian service back as well. Long time coming.

The only glaring hole in terms of intl long haul ops at YYC is now DEL. And the only one that can do it, operationally speaking, is AI.

YYC-DEL will come sooner or later, even now with the enhanced bilateral agreement its only a matter of when. Good things take time

I wonder if JAL will put a code on the WS flight, Ive been on a number of YYC-YVR flights that seemed to be full of tour groups. I could see them doing NRT-YVR, bus through BC then YYC-NRT or vice versa.

But yes that does draw people away from the JAL flight. I suspect this flight will do ok as Japan is a huge tourist market and before covid a rapidly growing one, but if they want to go more than 3x peak season they will need connections on both ends.

NRT is summer seasonal, most likely due to the fact they need to secure winter slots first, im guessing.

Surely this is a route that should be year round.

In theory yes although now you're also adding in flying time going backwards then forwards. YVR-NRT = 9h 55min and YVR-YYC-NRT = 14h 00min. If you look up some bookings in the Spring and Summer WestJet is undercutting itself with pricing on their codeshare flight with Japan airlines let alone AC or ANA. Maybe noflyzone can fill us in but I don't believe WS has any substantial partnership with JL in terms of revenue sharing so really they are eating into their long-haul profit margins. With so much competition at YVR already i'm not sure WS can compete on price, flight time, frequent flyer program, connection opportunities etc. Saying all that, it's like an election, polls don't count it's the votes on election day that count so we will have to wait and see how much WS really dents AC's NRT flight at YVR.

Speaking of the winter, that makes me think that seasonality is why they don't want to take any more 787s at all, since it seems like WS is sort of struggling a little bit with fleet utilization of the 787s this winter.

I guess operating YYC-NRT in the winter would be better than the plane sitting around doing nothing.

Maybe Fiji or Australia to fill the gaps? A guy can only wish!

Australia would be an amazing winter seasonal, but from another form it turns out the 787 cant do DXB out of YYC with a full payload, so there is no chance it can make SYD. Winter would help a lot, but Im not sure westjet would want to take the chance of cancelling when a chinook blows in.

But if WS wants to add more 787s down the road, they will need some more year around long haul. Maybe NRT is testing the waters on that.

They can always do what AC use to do. Flight starts in Toronto, stops in Vancouver and then continues to Australia.

Is this because of the restricted airspace over Russia necessitating a longer route?

^ it’s mostly YYC’s altitude plus the fact that WS has 320 seats in their B789s. A similar distance run out of YYZ or YVR (airports at or near sea level) would go out at full payload. But for YYC, that’s a lot of weight to carry and takeoff from a high altitude airport on a 12,500km run to DXB, and even worse on a westbound 13,170km run to SYD.

http://www.gcmap.com/mapui?P=yyc-dxb%2C+yyc-vie-ist-tbz-dxb%2C+yyc-syd&MS=wls&DU=km

This being said, DXB is doable. Tailwind going there, and the detour only adds about ~1 hour of flying, so it’s only a slight payload hit, if that. In zero wind, I believe the guy was saying a 3.5t payload hit. That's more than workable. SYD, on the other hand, is out of the question.

Based on their S23 announcement yesterday it seems like WS is focussing on having very high aircraft utilization. 787s are obviously pretty expensive so I don't think they want to have them sitting around all day in the winter either. Sure they can do CUN/PVR/OGG/HNL runs as well as LHR and 3-4x weekly CDG but there's still a lot of capacity left unaccounted for. I'm curious to see what they actually end up doing next winter. Summers are pretty much 100% accounted for and there's zero further growth to be had there now.

BTW based on the fares and recent cuts it looks like WS is going to axe YDQ sometime in late March?

Time for WS to order up some 777X's

Totally agree here. With the amount of Indian / south Asian population in Calgary and other cities like Edmonton and Saskatoon, etc.. continually increasing, as well as an emerging middle class in India (pop 1.4 billion) that will be travelling to places like Banff, it's only a matter of time.

WS should definitely try to make NRT year round. Also, I don’t discard a winter seasonal DXB run. Traffic to/from India is at its peak in the northern winter season, so it would make sense. Plus the cooler temps and winter jet-stream would mean little to no payload restriction out of YYC. Sure beats sending a B789 to CUN or Hawaii in my book.
