The rate of robberies in Canada has fallen to less than half what it was 15 years ago. There are already fewer offenders - repeat or otherwise. And armed robberies are even more rare - reading about an armed robbery in Vancouver is about as likely as you posting a reasonable comment.
Yeah, overall violent crime is decreasing throughout Canada, and it shows the positive steps that many municipalities are taking to achieve that. However, it is actually becoming worse in the crime-infested neighbourhood where you live:

VPD data shows violent crime in Vancouver highest since 2013

Data from the Vancouver Police Department shows violent crime is at its highest since 2013 and being driven predominantly by assaults and concentrated in the northern part of the city.
Not at all surprised with the previous administrations.

Precisely why we have this thread: to discuss the problem; not dismissing it left-and-right.

Yeah, softies pretending to be a sympathetic lot, until one day they become victims of crime too. Violent criminals should be taken down like that, and packed off to jail where they belong. If you want to hurt other people, then be prepared to be in pain.

Opinion: BC's updated bail policy for prolific offenders seems to be all bark, no bite
https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/opinion-bc-updated-bail-policy

Our province has been struggling with complex issues that have contributed to a rise in random, violent crime. Although these issues include a health care crisis, a housing crisis, an opioid crisis, and continuing fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic, the so-called “catch-and-release” bail system is most often cited as the problem.

I was at Woodwards today and made a point of checking out the TD Bank windows.

It seems they have put in some alternate (temporary?) half size panes.

Those appeared a few weeks ago. I'm not sure whether all the windows were smashed but the half-height frosting was always on the lower half of some of the glass. I think they may have added polycarbonate sheets that are half the height of the windows, (so two sheets per window) secured with the temporary wooden frames.

How sad, the city has stopped enabling the drug use enablers. I can sense EX-councillor Jean Swanson’s bitter tears.

I wonder if we'll see a trend towards reducing the amount of display windows on retail frontages?

From the article, VANDU said they paid "up to $20 an hour" for people to sweep the sidewalk and keep it clean. It then notes comments that there didn't appear to be any visible improvement during VANDU's six-month contract to clear the block. A comment that it would take people working around the clock to keep the street clean. As it turns out, Vancouver paid for the equivalent of nearly 4 people working around the clock.

-8760 hours in a year / 2 (six month contract) = 4,380 hours
-$320,000 contract / 4,380 hours = $73.06
-$73.06 / $20 an hour = 3.65
-The contract paid for the equivalent of 3.65 people working 24/7 for six months to keep one block clean and apparently it made no difference.

Quote:
When asked how the money was spent, [VANDU community organizer Vince] Tao said it was primarily going to the block leaders and residents involved in the dignified work programs plus “staffing costs for essentially doubling, tripling our capacity here at VANDU.”

[...]

City crews will also continue their street cleaning efforts which have been removing more than 2,000 kilograms of materials from East Hastings each day.

How about ones that can open fire if attacked?

On Sunday (Nov. 19), Premier David Eby vowed to integrate services for mental health, overdose response, addiction treatment and housing at St. Paul’s Hospital as part of his Safer Communities Action Plan.

“We are working with St. Paul’s to create a seamless treatment stream so when people show up at the hospital in distress and with issues around addiction and mental health that they can move directly to detox and into treatment,” said Eby from Queen Elizabeth Park.

“This will be a model that we can roll out across the whole province.”

Always assumed lots of glass was part of their "Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design" for banks.

They're waiting until he gets sentence before they put in the permanent glass.

I’m sure every business and resident around St.Paul’s is super excited about that.

People in crisis already hang around the hospital. Just walk down Burrard or visit Nelson Park. This will help those people instead of ignoring them.

Why yes, I’m sure they’ll all neatly and quietly file in and out of the facility.

Not at all like the folks using the Yaletown OPS that sprawl out on the sidewalk, get naked near the kid’s playground in Emery Barnes Park….or the denizens of the nearby Murray Hotel with their dealing in whatever at all hours etc etc…..

So now you're objecting to a proposal to deal with some of the people who have already been taken into hospital in crisis, that might offer them a chance to move directly to detox and into treatment? I guess you think it's better to just park them in the street?
