Nope (which is why I posted this on the generic Moncton thread).

GNB Press Release:

Quote:
Site chosen for Provincial Youth Treatment Centre
12 December 2022
MONCTON (GNB)

The Provincial Youth Treatment Centre will be built on Salisbury Road in Moncton, the provincial government announced today.

The facility, for youth aged 12 to 18, will provide specialized treatment in an environment that is more home-like than a traditional hospital setting.

“Our young people need to receive help in a timely fashion,” said Health Minister Bruce Fitch. “This eight-bed centre is an important piece of our mental health strategy for youth in our province and will greatly assist those who require this level of support.”

Design work will begin in early 2023, with construction expected to be completed by 2026 at a cost of about $29.4 million.

The centre will play a key role in the province’s mental health plan as an addition to the existing continuum of support and services for children and youth.

The centre will be staffed by an interdisciplinary team, who will oversee therapeutic programs.

The new centre will complement the eight-bed Restigouche Youth Unit at the Restigouche Hospital Centre in Campbellton. Established in 2018, the Restigouche unit offers specialized psychiatric care in a secure environment. It will continue to focus on forensic services and on supporting youth who require specialized care in a hospital setting.

The Vitalité Health Network operates the Restigouche Youth Unit and will also operate the Provincial Youth Treatment Centre.

“Both the Restigouche unit and the new centre will provide intensive support and services to youth with complex mental health needs but in different therapeutic environments,” said Dr. France Desrosiers, Vitalité president and chief executive officer. “The addition of the centre will also ensure specialized youth mental health services are available in both the north and south of the province.”

The implementation of the centre is a key initiative in the Department of Health’s Inter-Departmental Addiction and Mental Health Action Plan, Priority areas for 2021-2025.

Access to addiction and mental health services is also one of five action areas in the provincial health plan, Stabilizing Health Care: An Urgent Call to Action.
I am not 100% sure, but I think the facility will be built on the site of the former ABU campus.

Indeed. The province purchased the land for $600,000 in June.

It's not just you...an "8 bed" facility costs $30M...that seems bonkers to me...even with current construction costs?

That's exactly what jumped out at me too. There must be some specialized components that are very costly.

Either that or government over spend...that number is crazy when the land cost $600K.

Apparently Ukrainian immigration to Moncton this last year exceeded 700 individuals.

Overall immigration to the city last year totaled 3,000. (info from the T&T)

Wow. I’m very curious to see CMA growth numbers as per July 1st when they are released - I think typically in January? Based on provincial growth I’m curious to see if we broke through 5,000.

44% of all new permanent residents in NB settle in Greater Moncton (T&T article)

https://tj.news/times-and-transcript/102029958 (paywall)

BTW - that note above about the 3,000 new immigration applications for Moncton this year, well, this was apparently only for the first eight months!!. The final total might be closer to 5,000.

Immigration, or the weird not-quite-refugee, theoretically-temporary program that most Ukrainians have arrived through? Big difference in anything other than the shortest term.

I found the T&T article to be maddingly imprecise in it's terminology, so I didn't quote more of what they had to say.

As for the Ukrainians, my gut feeling is that refugees that fled across the border to Poland or Romania probably intend to return home once the war is over. I imagine refugees that fled further afield to Canada or the US probably intend to stay. I doubt too many Ukrainian refugees here will go back, and will instead apply for permanent residency.

Whether they stay in NB or head to central or western Canada is a different question. Ukrainians however are easily assimilated and I think more likely to stay put than other more easily identifiable visible minorities would be. These people would be more likely to flock to ethnic enclaves in Toronto.

I don't know if Ukraine, however the war goes for them, will be keen to see a permanent gigantic population decline, as their entire fertile female and under-18 populations decamp. They weren't exactly in the middle of a baby boom or immigration surge pre-war either.

Agreed on the people heading the furthest away being least likely to return, but it's weird to see the different terminology anyway.

According to this CBC NB article, 25,000 new people in NB in past year.

Some highlights:
- Statistics Canada figures show province growing faster than national average
- Statistics Canada says New Brunswick's population grew by almost 25,000 people over the past year, the largest increase in decades.
- New Brunswick's population stood at 820,786 as of Oct. 1
- A review of the population estimates going back to the 1950s shows the next largest increase was 16,717 between October 1970 and 1971.
- New Brunswick's health-care system has also struggled. Thousands more names were added to a wait list for a family doctor.
- School enrolment has climbed. Finance Minister Ernie Steeves said earlier this month that record population growth resulted in 4,000 new students in the current school year.
- The province has also scrambled to respond to growing homelessness. In Moncton, front-line advocates, city workers and RCMP counted more than 550 people living outside and couch surfing in October.
