According to this article YVR is DEL’s 7th largest international market. That’s pretty huge.

https://simpleflying.com/air-india-daily-delhi-vancouver-777-flights-summer-2023/

“By P2P demand, Vancouver was Delhi's seventh-largest international market. Only Dubai, London Heathrow, Singapore, Toronto, Kuala Lumpur, and Hong Kong were larger. At an airport level, Vancouver Airport was bigger than all US markets, although San Francisco was close (293,000; 401 PDEW).”

Air Canada will be keen to get back in it as soon as allowable no doubt.

Be curious if a second (or 3rd) India route from YVR will become viable.

Looking at the latest census data the South Asian population in the Lower Mainland continues to grow strongly.

Unlimited flights between India and Canada given green light in move to rekindle trade ties
Previously each country was limited to 35 flights per week

Add in connections from Calgary and Edmonton, route should stay full most of the year with 0 issues.

Based on the 2021 Census data released last week in the Lower Mainland the South Asian population has increased to over 422,000 and the Filipino population has increased to approx 146,000.
These two groups are predicted to continue to grow substantially.
Those numbers certainly help support the YVR-India and YVR-MNL flights
Meanwhile Chinese growth has slowed relatively but still by far the largest of all visible minority groups in B.C. and Vancouver.

That and it has also been in the news that there are over two million immigration applications backlogged in the queue with vast majority from Indian. That information alone is berserk but will definitely bode well for a lot more travel between the two counties.

I am really surprised if we won't see more Indian destinations in the future.

KLM set to put their largest aircraft on YVR-AMS next summer. A huge capacity boost.

https://www.aeroroutes.com/eng/221116-klns23inc

Amsterdam – Vancouver eff 25MAR23 777-300ER operates 1 daily, replacing previously filed 777-200ER/787-10 (787-10 only from 24MAY23 in previous listing)

I just wanted to say that I clicked on page 1 of this thread and it was nostalgic seeing the Canada Line called "RAV line"

That was 17 YEARS ago! There are people born when that post was made are graduating this year from high school.

That was posted just before construction even started too. Crazy that in those 17 years the line was built, opened, and is already in need of capacity relief!

lots of aircraft to bring them here. don't know where they're going to live when they land. not enough housing for the people that are already here.

More destinations to India from YVR (or YYZ) depends on if migration patterns change imo. With most immigrants still coming from northern India I would (medium to long term) see higher frequencies from DEL and maybe another Indian airline even (if they want to enter the market).

At this point relatively few migrants in the Van area are from places like BLR or HYD or CCU and there's not enough of a strong connection to warrant flights to those places for a while.

I'm not that familiar with the Indian aviation market, so besides Air India, what other Indian airlines could shoot their shot at launching flights to Canada.

FWIW, I was chatting with my boss the other day who is South Asian. She says that while of course most people try for the cheapest flights (ie. with a connection), most families try to book their elderly relatives on direct flights.

She says it's easier for them because of the language barrier, among other reasons. IE, less connections means less confusion for people who don't speak English, and less worry for the family.

Only 2, and both of them are a long shot.

1. Vistara, which has only recently started receiving a limited number of B789s. They've hinted at US service first and foremost. Don't know if Canada is on their radar. Maybe.

2. Jet Airways. Yes, the same Jet Airways that ceased operations a few years back. They have actually stated they want to resume operations, believe it or not. They used to fly to YYZ and the US, via a scissor hub at BRU.

Indigo is another one, that has plans to wet lease B77Ws, but they will be in high density config and will be used for European service, not North America.

That's not saying much. Most people would try and book the shortest possible itinerary for their elderly parents or grand parents. I know I would, and I'm not Indian.

QR on the horizon?

Saw this on airliners.net - could be just gossip but here it is anyway.

“Qatar on the other hand will have double the frequency on its bilateral increase. QR will decrease YUL-DOH to 5x weekly but that is so YYZ-DOH can be served daily on QR metal and then YVR-DOH will also be another new route on QR metal served 5x weekly similar to YUL. This setup can change as final decisions are soon to be made but that's currently what the plan is so far. Makes sense for QR to decrease YUL to 5x weekly so that all 3 major Canadian cities can be served and YYZ would get daily due to it having the most demand in traffic.”

He's also the one that said a few months ago that QR is allowed to fly 11x weekly to Canada and chooses not to exercise those 4 additional rights because they want daily service to YYZ.

This being said, it is true that Canada's transport minister met with Qatari officials in Ottawa last month. He also had a meeting with the Canada-U.A.E business council last month as well. So could be additional rights are on the way.

^ and….right on cue……

Lol….and it is literally made up stuff.

Meanwhile, in the land of reality, YUL has daily flights to the Gulf. YVR has zero. And the only airport that lost something to the benefit of another is YVR, which literally lost AC's DEL service, to the benefit of, you guessed it, YUL !

Reality is a 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵....but you can hold on to YYZORDs comments. They obviously make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

Hence my proviso
It seemed to take forever for TK to get here but perhaps there is some credence to QR’s plans.

^ There is, but not because of YYZORD's comments, but rather, because of this from last month.
