Yes, I agree with you about the trees. Also, they're standard *"blah" deciduous trees. Pointy Mediterranean cypress would have been better, IMO, if they insist on trees.
But I really like the green wall, plus that beveled angle that the store is built on. Like some, I rather lamented the destruction of the rotunda at first, but I like this corner.
It's 'dynamic' and enhances that "downtown" feeling.

I think the trees in front will be fine as long as they prune them regularly to keep them small.

I had my opposition to the early concepts but I will agree that now it is considerably better and the interface with the street looks good. Now it's just a question on how the inclined street merging with the steps plays out given the gongshow over at the Deloitte.

Still liked the rotunda though.

That was the exact first thing I noticed on the first clear pictures from yesterday.

These things always look perfect when an architect draws them on a CAD tool. Reality always kicks in a few weeks later, when the design has to interface with the reality of the public. Then they have to come in and add all the adjustments that they forgot.

I've seen this story on pretty much most of the projects downtown.

Oh yes of course. I forgot. The City of Vancouver is always too poor for any such tree around town at public spaces including iconic plazas such as the one in front of the Art Gallery. Now that we know that "nice things" are either from CAC money or direct funding from developers, it explains why things are so shoddily done even though it is overseen and permitted by the City. Thanks for the correction!

To add to the Apple Store, I have to maintain that this will not age gracefully, unlike the previous glass dome. In no time it will have to be rebuilt. It does look somewhat sharp brand new though.

Apple announced today the Apple Pacific Centre store will officially open on Friday, November 18, kicking off weekend-long grand opening celebrations. This will be the largest Apple Store in Metro Vancouver.

I noticed they have NO skate-board metal stoppers on the stairs, should be trashed prior to opening if they don't get on that real soon.

... and the wood slats on the benches are oriented with their ends along the long side, which is probably the side a skateboarder would target (?).

There does seem to be a scarcity of railings (compared to Brentwood!).

I'm also surprised that the benches don't have railings on their uphill sides the way that planters do (ie at Keefer Steps).
A blind person walking down the steps might reach the bench, think they're at the bottom of the stairs, and walk off the end of the bench. Splat!

It's weird they were both replaced within the past 2-3 years. They used to be those old ones with the tiny little set of bulbs below them.
