Excellent! Thank you.

I have taken the liberty to embed the video directly into this post.

• Video Link

This project will most definitely deserve it's own thread. Once site prep has begun, and hopefully when more info is available, I will create the thread.

I was curious how they plan to reuse the old DFO building. Based on that video, they're only going to keep the front facade and use it as one wall of a long atrium.

I'm really impressed with it. Very nice design. This is going to be a huge asset to the city.

Do you think this project will come before PAC, or is this unnecessary because appropriate zoning already exists.

There is an open house tonight at the Gulf Fisheries Centre for a public presentation regarding ASEC. Renders and models will be available to view. I don't think I will be going (still recovering from pneumonia), but if anyone else is interested, you have to register first online with Eventbrite. The web address is below:

T&T article regarding the ASEC, based on the public presentation the other evening:
https://tj.news/times-and-transcript/102002155 (paywall)

A few renderings were included in the article:

Interior atrium featuring the whale skeleton hanging from the rafters

Panoramic rendering as seen from the NW

Exterior rendering of the northern part of the front of the building

Although listed as a $700M project, the actual building itself will cost $300M (still 2.5x the cost of the Avenir Centre).

Initial site prep starts "before the end of the year" and will focus on realigning roadways around the site. Major construction will begin next year.

Final building design is not expected to be completed until next summer, when final tenders are issued.

Construction will occur in three phases:

- Phase one is site prep, starting this fall.
- Phase two is construction of the annex to the north of the current building, and this will start next summer.
- Phase three will be deconstruction of the current Gulf Fisheries Centre, and it's replacement with the remainder of the science complex, and restoration of the original facade. This will begin in 2027. This phase will continue until completion in 2031.

Building permits issued in Moncton already top $300M after only the third quarter of the year.
https://tj.news/times-and-transcript/102004648 (paywall)

Building permits issued in the city of Moncton have reached $309.6M as of the end of September. Over $89M in permits were issued in the third quarter alone. Apartment building construction accounts for over 75% of the value of the third quarter permits.

Even though it'll be spread out over several years, the new federal science building will bolster the numbers!

Agenda for the November PAC meeting for the city of Moncton:

Another verrrry thin agenda for this generally uninspiring year.

Reminds me of Seoul City Hall in a way.

Just an add on that folks back home would like. Extra wide sidewalks with one section for pedestrians and another for bicycles. Moncton should adopt this on some of its busier roads.

Thanks guys for keeping me up to date with events back home. The changes are quite surprising to see. But what is the city doing about parking downtown as it seems their parking lots are disappearing? Won't it be hard to park downtown unless they build some large parking garages?

Pretty much ALL of the new multi-storey residential downtown has underground parking, seems to be a theme in new builds. That helps a lot.

Glad to hear that SSP is able to keep you apprised of goings on in the old home place.

I hope you browse all the individual Moncton threads, and not just the main Moncton thread. The main thread is relatively inactive and tends to deal with generalized issues. The neighbourhood and project specific threads tend to be more active (especially the downtown and retail threads).

As for downtown parking - the writing is on the wall for the ocean of surface parking south of Main Street. It may take 20-25 years to accomplish, but eventually it will all be filled in.

Most of this surface parking is leased monthly parking in any event, and is therefore unavailable for casual visitors to the downtown. It will be replaced by enclosed parking structures, and hopefully there will actually be more casual parking than before.

There are big plans for the parking lot behind Assumption Place. The city is reworking the street grid in the area, and it is rumoured that Ashford (the company which owns the land) intends to build at least a half dozen multi-storey structures (maybe up to 20 storeys), creating an actual three dimension downtown for the city.
