If you think Texas is a bad place, you’re more than welcome to leave. Everywhere has its pros and cons, with regards to the politics, culture, people, scenery, and Texas is no different. For example, I strongly dislike the California government. Does that mean I that California is a joke? No. There’s more to life than just red or blue, and California has great people and innovation as well. There are good people all over Texas and to call it a joke because of a simple loud few (which is something found on BOTH sides) is nonsense. At the end of the day, I’ve gotten mostly positive remarks about Texas, but I’m usually surrounded by more open-minded people.

I don't care enough to dig through that. Why don't you move? Might help with your insecurities. Probably won't, because the issue is internal, and a geographic change won't address that. Try writing a gratitude list.

Encouraging people to leave if they complain is always the perfect cap to a conversation like this. Let's talk about ABIA updates instead, shall we?

It looks like the forum self policed itself to end this nonsense which is always better than a Mod having to do it. But I will add that the Sandy/Texas episode was the best episode ever of SpongeBob.

Is there still any belief that Delta is going be a major funder of the new terminal, or do we think they've taken an official backseat to American at the airport?

Look at Delta's purchases coming- over 300 planes on order. They have a gaping hole in their route network. Atlanta is full.

American may wish to blunt Delta in Austin but part of the reason for AA's expansion here is because at this point they're seeking to take load off of DFW. There is something like 14-16 flights a day already between Austin and DFW.

^ That is why we desperately need high speed rail in Texas. It is ridiculously inefficient and an irresponsible climate impact to be flying such short distances.

Delta and American are both investing more in the main terminal with their clubs. I honestly don’t know if SW makes airport investments the way the bigger airlines do but the new modest southern concourse has SW written all over it. However, I think the airport can fund the new concourse. The big financial burden is the new terminal processing building north of the existing terminal.

By just about every way of looking at it, Southwest is one of the ten largest airlines in the world, and it is the 3rd or 4th largest US airline by most metrics. As a major player in the Austin market, it would seem logical that SW participates in expansion of Bergstrom. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Largest_airlines_in_the_world

I agree but that doesn’t mean it will happen. That’s all I’m saying.

The new processing center would be a complete overhaul of ticketing, security and baggage claim to meet the modern needs with planned expansions in place for when they are needed. It really would benefit all of the airlines tremendously but I don’t know how much of that would translate to a check being written to the port. Ultimately, you need airlines willing to invest hundreds of millions at a time where they might be averse to new debt. Right? Like, it’s not enough for it to be a no brainer thing to do. Still need to find the money.

High-speed rail is something I can get behind.

Me too. However, we have to prove it to all the naysayers and cynics, and unfortunately that requires significant investment and property (albeit significantly less than a major freeway). And that is where the naysayers and cynics are the loudest.

We need both air travel and HSR for different reasons. Shorter regional trips, to H2O's point, should be by rain in the vast majority of cases.

I don't think that'll be too difficult. I fall into the naysayer/cynic basket for most public transportation initiatives; however, a high-speed rail is an easy sell.

How quick will you be able to get to Houston/Dallas? It's a good 2.5 hour commitment/hassle flying.

Y'all realize the biggest players opposed to THSR are the airlines themselves. And, their lobby is much deeper than those for its development.

Now...back to ABIA. Delta has maintained a relatively slow post-COVID capacity rebuild. I still believe they will be a large player in the expanded airport.

Problem is, they'll be trying to play catch-up with Southwest's heavy presence and American's just downright ridiculous growth. They labeled Austin a "focus city" a few years back and even before the pandemic they didn't seem to be truly driven to make moves.

To be fair, delta barley ever officially hyped austin as a focus city. 99% of the hype came from here and Airliners.

In fairness, I don't think they've done too much at their other "focus city" (RDU) either.

Delta is known for slow, methodical planning...

Additionally, they have had major projects underway at their SEA, SLC, LGA and BOS hubs. They are also upgrading ATL.
