If true, this is just another in a long line of instances of the U being a poor member of the community in SLC. Quite saddened to hear this news.
IMO the U should have been building a burgeoning downtown campus center years ago rather than attempting to cram everything up on the hill. It would have alleviated so much traffic from the neighborhoods/roads near the main campus, given easier access for students coming from the North or South via FrontRunner or TRAX, and provided a continual influx of vibrancy to the downtown neighborhood.
Also, I feel that from a teaching, learning, and research point of view, colleges and universities would benefit from being where the issues are. Downtowns are the heart of the arts and culture scene as well as an important connection point for those who rely on social services.
