There was a bill not that long ago that would have changed the oath. All parties supported it except the Liberals who blocked it. (The Quebec Liberals couldn't catch a break with the majority of voters here if it hit them in their glue-covered hands.)

I have no idea what the CAQ will do on this one. They don't seem too thrilled about the oath either but want to stick to the rules and process: do the oath, sit in the assembly, and then we'll talk about changing the oath.

Silly for them to "renew"" their oath in any event -- they already swore allegiance to QEII and her successors.

It wasn't legally mandatory in that case in order to sit in the legislature. Many other NDP MPPs didn't go to it.

We can walk and chew gum at the same time. Having something more important isn't an excuse not to talk about anything else. There will always be an emergency somewhere that someone will use as an excuse not to talk about something they would prefer to ignore.

Hearst still has a fairly large population that can't speak English although that is shrinking. And their town council meetings are probably about 80-90% in French which is unusual for Ontario. But Hearst is probably in the vicinity of 10% anglophone, and in Ontario moreso than New Brunswick there is definitely more deference towards English on the part of francophones.

Even in places like Hearst and Prescott-Russell.

If you teleported Hearst exactly as is into Abitibi, the need for English would vanish.

Yup.

The New Brunswick government and federal agencies like the RCMP are also a lot more seamless in dealing with francophone areas of NB in French.

Which I guess one would expect in a province that's about one third francophone, versus one that isn't even 5% francophone.

Even the corporate world (including multinationals) is way more respectful of the French fact in northern NB, compared to northern or eastern Ontario.

The last time I was in the peninsula, I ended up in some industrial job sites, and almost all of the safety and informational signage was always in French only.

I don't think you'd see that *anywhere* in Ontario. No matter how francophone a place is.

And, conversely, you wouldn't see any English only safety signage anywhere in Quebec.

Of course that's OK in la Peninsule, but would be a capital offense in la Belle Province.
