I'm not sure if individual mayoral campaigns have the means to conduct proper polls, but if they did, they likely wouldn't be releasing the results anyway.

Campaigns do 'polls' in that they will ask people at the door or on the phone who they intend to vote for and then compile the responses. The rule of thumb is that this method has about a 50 percent margin of error, because people will often say something like, "uh, I'm voting for your candidate of course," in order to end the conversation.
This is how a lot of signs end up on people's yards too.
Eager campaign volunteer at the door. "Can we count on your support??"
Undecided voter who needs to pick up her son from soccer practice in a minute: "Sure. Yes."
Volunteer: "Great! Can we put a sign on your lawn?"
Normal person: "Uh.... sure?"
Campaigns will talk about this 'good' response as if it means something, but smart ones know it often doesn't.
