76ers owners say they want Flyers to join them in proposed Center City arena

Quote:
The Philadelphia 76ers are set on leaving the Wells Fargo Center, and team owners say they've had discussions about bringing the Flyers with them.

The Sixers have proposed the development of a $1.3 billion Center City arena at the current site of the Fashion District on Market Street, where they plan to move the team after its lease at the Wells Fargo Center expires in 2031.

"We'd love the Flyers to come, we're having discussions with them. We don't know what will happen," Adelman said. He added that "hopefully [the proposed arena] aligns with [Comcast's] goals as well."

In a recent interview with the Business Journal, Comcast Spectacor CEO David Scott said he was "disappointed" in the 76ers' plan to leave and "would love them to stay here with us."

Whether the Flyers join them in making the move or not, Adelman said the Sixers will be leaving South Philadelphia.

"The Philadelphia 76ers will not play in the Wells Fargo Center past 2031," said Adelman, who joined the ownership group on Thursday when he bought a portion of billionaire Michael Rubin's stake in the team. "That's my pledge to Josh, Tad and all of you. 'No' is not an option."

Sixers ownership wants an arena of their own and one that can help revive Market East and Center City as a whole.

Original plans put the cost for the arena at about $1.3 billion, but Adelman said the the model is constantly being adjusted based on economic conditions and costs could rise. Through 76 Devcorp, the team plans to fund the arena privately without public subsidies. Harris said "if you were just doing it as an investment project, you probably wouldn't do it, but that's not why we are doing it."

From the Center City Residents Association's (CCRA) website

Public Meeting Regarding 14-30 S. 21st Street

Quote:
Monday, October 24, 6-7 pm via Zoom

The Parkway Corporation plans to construct a new 390,000 square-foot residential high-rise at the corner of 21st and Ludlow Streets. The project is “by right” under the Philadelphia zoning code. However, the public will have input on the project as part of the Philadelphia City Planning Civic Design Review process.

Prior to that public meeting, Parkway Corporation would like to present the project to the CCRA membership. You do not have to be a member to attend: the intent is to gather input from the neighborhood. The architects for the project, Erdy McHenry Architecture, will present the plans, renderings, space program, and project details in a brief presentation. After the presentation there will be a question-and-answer session.

That sucks. THe worst part about the current arena is the hockey alignment for lower level seating. It’s brutal.

I don't think they actually expect the flyers to join them. The same reason the sixers are so motivated to get their own arena is the same reason the Flyers are unlikely to leave theirs, especially after dumping a ton of money into it. Also... I'd be willing to bet the flyers have a much more surbaban/car-centric fan base, the math on a move to center likely doesn't work as well for them.

They're just saying this because it's the right thing to say for them right now as they try to curry public favor for this arena.

About how many floors is 390k sq. ft? Any comps to share?

No way the Flyers are joining the Sixers. The Flyers are owned by Spectacor, who also owns the WFC and a few dozen other arenas. It makes no sense that Spectacor would move their most prominent team out of their largest arena so they can be a tenant for another company. It's like asking Brian Roberts if he wants Fios installed at his house.

Great points. Maybe even it’s more of a chess move: get the Delco/NE Philly white flyers crowd fired up about potentially having to travel into - gasp - center city to watch their beloved Orange and Black, and have the sentiment change from “don’t build a new arena” to “let the Sixers build their own arena, that’s fine, keep the Flyers where they are!”

Great shot!
I took my kids to the early part of the celebration on Broad last night. Things haven't always been great since the pandemic but what a great experience. Between that and the EPL Mornings at Dilworth last weekend it's been good reminder about all of the awesome things going on in the city!

Are we really proposing a sunbelt parking podium project on Market Street?

I thought we had moved beyond this. Let’s hope the CDR process results in some constructive “feedback”.

21st and Ludlow renderings, from tonight's CCRA meeting. The most contentious topic at the meeting was Parkway's intent to use the public space bonus to create a "public room" open 8 am to 9 pm for use by the community. All rentals, including a few two story "lanai" units midway up.
