I know they were trying to rent out windowless basement suites at the Carriage Works. Wonder how that worked out.

Is that even legal to do as I thought you needed a certain size of window as a secondary fire escape route if your door escape option is blocked.

old shriners complex on wellington cres. was being demo-ed today when i rode by on the bike. was there ever anything definitively settled on with that site? surprised it was so unceremoniously destroyed like this with not even a chirp out of any of the media outlets.

Most if not all of its functions were transferred over to the Rehab center for Children at 1155 Notre Dame Ave in the old Christie Biscuit Building

The Notre Dame site was designed to be a one stop location for children needing special service but I have heard that it has issues with specialist scheduling that the old one did not have.

The old location i believe was starting to slide into the Assiniboine River so the demolition is probably a preemptive move

Wild. Always wondered what that building was. Thanks. Time marches on I guess.

My son goes to SSCY centre on Notre Dame. And it's great a lot of services are in the same place. But it's not like he goes there for one day only and see's everyone at the same time.

I don't think the scheduling thing is a result of the place itself. Rather the overall state of Healthcare. One doctor is only there on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Then another is only there on Wednesdays. So you just go there whenever you have appointments.

If you schedule far enough out, you can probably see a doctor and another specialist on the same day if you needed to.

^ That just reflects the reality that many physicians here work a number of "jobs", i.e. a physician might work in their own clinic, in the hospital, doing some teaching or research, some travel out of town, etc.

I suppose on some level we're lucky that Winnipeg is big enough to have a reasonably wide range of services such that people don't regularly have to travel to larger centres for specialized services (the way you would if you lived in, let's say, Dauphin), but on the other hand we're small enough that someone probably won't be at SSCY every day of the week.

There's a doctor, who is retiring but that's besides the point, who works at SSCY then also works on Tache across from the Hospital. I don't really know why they would split time between the clinics. Just pick one. Seems inefficient. Maybe it's an access thing. But we've seen said Dr at both locations for the same appointments.

I would expect pretty much every service to be available in Winnipeg, except the very specialized things which are sort of scattered across the country. My son will be going to Shriners in Montreal at some point for services that are only available in maybe 4, for sure 3, hospitals in the country. Those hospitals being located in Van, Tor, and Mtl. The maybe is in Calgary, but I'd probably skip that option anyways.

There are a number of specialties and types of surgery that you can't get in Manitoba at all. Neurology was in the news with the collapse of the MS clinic but that's just one

Yes the neurology thing is disappointing. My son going to Montreal is for neurology. Even if they still had that unit operating in Manitoba, they were not capable of doing the neurosurgery he requires.

Kind of like pediatric cardiac surgery being done in Edmonton. Etc. There are certain places where these skill sets are centred, for various reasons.

^ if the price is right what's the big deal? IMO, in a basement suite windows are mostly useless. They are small, probably limited operation, and in certain areas of the City a target for people looking for something to smash as the walk by.

Carriage Works is a fully sprinklered building with all the required fire resistance ratings and exiting. There is no real safety issue without a window, just a perceived one.

Re the old Shriners hospital. When I needed to go there in the 80s the place was pretty run down at that time and seemed to have lots of big and unused spaces. Honestly surprised it kept operating as a going concern for as long as it did.

This city sucks so much.

I can't believe it!

I moved back from Seattle, went to a Jets game, and parked at Portage Place...

Had cigars and drinks afterward at Thomas Hinds (totally awesome lounge, piano playing, cigar smoking..something you would see in downtown Chicago)

And all the doors to the skywalk and associated buildings were closed afterward.

Took a cab to Wolseley and will have to come back tomorrow to pay the overnight fee at Portage Place.

I am really beginning to hate Winnipeg and I live in the inner city in a 110 year old house.

Seriously, fuck this place.

It sucks!
