Montreal will easily have one of - if not the - best rail systems of any metro area in the Americas. There will be some that are larger, but probably not as clean, reliable, or frequent.

Was initially supposed to open last summer, but that was delayed by an entire year. At the the current pace (doing next to nothing all summer and only picking up for a month in Fall), I'm not confident it will even open next summer. Tracks even even all laid yet.

Meanwhile, the east is going well. Many of the stations are well advanced, much of the tracks are installed, with centenary polls. We've been joking that east might open before south for a while, but now it starting to look like that may actually happen, or at least pretty close.

Note that south is supposed to be a far easier project, that was supposed to open a full 2 years earlier.

I agree. I have said that before. It definitely will have one of the most efficient rail rapid transit systems in North America when the REM is complete. Having lived in both MTL and Toronto I always felt the MTL metro was more useful. More useful in terms of where it can take you. If Montreal ever upgrades the rest of its commuter rail to run more like metro systems (like like london, sydney etc) that would be amazing. Montreal will be the best hands down anywhere in this hemisphere. I actually used commuter rail quite a bit in my early days in MTL. it's ok as it is but could be improved a lot.

It's a shame some people are making such a big deal about the REM east. The east and north areas of Montreal need better transit. Does anyone know if there are still places to extend the blue or green lines further east????

Well the blue line extension east of the current St-Michel terminus is officially under construction and so far the REM de l'Est is still in the design/re-design stage.

So eventually there'll be 5 more stations in the east with the blue line but the REM extensions/new lines towards the East seem to still be in their design phases.

The system's path was redesigned and modified but I haven't heard of any further updates regarding the entire situation. You can see the newly proposed lines in this article (it's in French) that also explains where the new lines would offer transfers to the orange, green and blue lines: https://www.24heures.ca/2022/08/25/un-no...ser-au-centre-ville-selon-des-organismes

Thanks for sharing that. I hope they design a good route for the REM east and it goes through. Glad to hear the blue line extension is under way.

TTC has begun efforts to integrate Line 6 with the rest of the system and are expecting an opening of September 2023. This would mean the project arrives on-time(!)

I don't know if they "officially" gave up, but we don't hear about it anymore.

What's really bad was this exchange; a male transit commissioner said that the odour must be a "gender equities issue" because he never noticed it. Said that women have a stronger sense of smell. Well, if anyone has a sense of smell that's off, it's this guy because everyone else who have passed through Parliament and Rideau stations have noticed it.

Cool to see those open pits. That pedestrian tunnel to CIBC a legacy connection to the Yonge subway? How do developers connect to the subways and PATH (or RÉSO in Montreal)? Do they close the street while they build?

There has been some local speculation (not from official sources), that the odor at Rideau Station can be traced back to an old drainage ditch named the Bywash that became an open sewer in the days of early Ottawa. Perhaps, the whole aquifer and subsoils remain contaminated. The Bywash crossed Rideau Street right at Rideau Station. Parliament Station is another story.

Edmonton's south extension start is the deep utilities upgrade. The main work is not supposed to get going until next year. The bridge over the Black mud will be started soon.

West LRT is going with work started to the Henday crossing this week.
