I love how city comparisons bring out the boosters from other cities.

The Phoenix one is bad. Doesn't mean Phoenix is bad. SLC has a few stinkers too (looking at you, Shilo Inn).

Personally I think all those CCH look worse in person than in the pics comrade posted. So does the SLC one. I don’t think I’ve seen a dedicated convention center hotel that wasn’t a slight eyesore. I thought I’d like Cleveland’s but the finished product underwhelms. I think SLC’s is reasonably attractive for what it is.

For sure. I like and have lived in both cities.

I'm not saying it isn't bad it's that's just a weird photo, that perspective with just the hotel in view is not one you'd ever have when out and about in the city. But it provides 1000 rooms for the convention center has been a big catalyst for downtown Phoenix so it's all good.

LOL true, I'm stoked for Astra in SLC and Central Station in Phoenix. I think both should be good additions to the each skyline.

I just barely realized this, but if you look closely at the rendering of the Hyatt, you can actually see the light strips on the right side of the building. Turns out they weren’t really a surprise, we just weren’t looking hard enough. According to the rendering, they’re only on the east side, however they’re all supposed to be the same length.

I remember they were clearing the plot around the corner on 2nd for the Phase II apartments of West Quarter. Have they started excavation on that yet?

No, no work yet on the South side of the block, but they've kept all the sidewalk canopies and barriers on site, which seems to imply they're aiming to begin on that soon.

West Quarter Block C still hasn't had its design review. On the portal it looks like they have been held up by the planning department for various reasons and they have submitted new drawings as of 10/17. Maybe (hopefully) they'll be at the November 9th PC meeting. Once it passes, I think construction will start soon after.

We tend to talk down about the quality of projects from local developers but if WQ is fully built-out as envisioned, I think it will be the most transformative project for downtown SLC since City Creek. On top of the new midblock street, new units, office space, and hotels, the new grocery store on 200 S (part of Block C) is going to be a gamechanger for downtown livability and walkability.

Agree Atlas! Once you are standing in front of the West Quarter, you really understand the scale and its important position in west downtown. It's really great.

Not that it matters what I think but Phoenix is absolutely killing it right now. Best food and beverage scene in the west behind LA, while San Fran and Seattle are licking their wounds. I spend a lot of time down there and what they've done with Downtown PHX should be studied by other cities. Absolutely gorgeous desert surroundings, crazy action in the different hoods. Love it. Wish SLC had half of what they have going on down there right now.

Even the suburbs kick our downtown's ass lol (okay, maybe just one).

I was in Phoenix back in 2019 for work and one night we went out to Westgate in Glendale and it blew anything we have out of the water in terms of adult entertainment options. Granted, the sprawl aspect of it was atrocious but that's how the area around the Viv should be and it's not even close (at least a more urban version of it).

Jokes aside, I hope SLC can look as good as Edmonton someday (with a better backdrop). Since they added the 823 ft Stantec Tower, they've got one of the best looking skylines in the west in my opinion.
