He was literally on the Gastown preservation committee. Not sure if he's as "tear it down" as you might hope.

After tonight, Vancouverite's finally have an answer to the question everyone has been asking for the past four years: "Vancouver has a mayor?".

Mr. Nowhere-To-Be-Found can always find a job in the poverty industry thanks to his very close connections.

One thing of note is that Ken Sim got 85,732 out of 168,220 valid mayoral votes out of 171,494 ballots, in other words 50.96% of mayoral votes were for Sim.

An actual majority mandate.

Well the downtown peninsula has been the epitome of a sim city for quite a long time now. It doesn't fix any of the social problems. It will also take a lot of progressive fortitude to cut through Vancouver's Nimbyism, and, I mean, do we actually want the entire city to look like the downtown peninsula?

So you are going to try and tell us that protecting Gastown heritage has anything to do with development in the rest of the city.

Did not realize the connection. Makes voting for him all the better. Seems like a good guy who has some common sense.

Surprised none of our Surrey forumers have chimed in about Doug McCallum blessedly getting the boot. Will be interesting to see how the new mayor tries to unwind Surrey’s new police force.

I have to wonder what it means for his UrbanYVR site, and whether he'll still keep it going.

He was practically running it all on his own.

Of course the other big loser last night was the NDP. All those high profile endorsements of Stewart and its implicated meddling in municipal affairs looks stupid now. And if the anti-incumbent mood continues it doesn't bode well for them.

People are projecting a lot of their own wishful thinking onto Sim, which is easy to do considering he will be new to the job. His campaign was quite moderate, and that was its appeal, change but not too much change, practical rather than ideological, etc.

As for how this portends anything for the provincial NDP, I think it’s a bit of a stretch.

ABC has a majority across the board, no excuses now, but at least we won't get bogged down in ridiculous council debates (I hope).

Voter turnout down in Vancouver, up in Surrey compared to 2018

A municipal election that brought sweeping change to B.C.'s largest city saw lower turnout than the 2018 contest.

With 100 per cent of precincts reporting, a total of 171,494 votes were cast in Vancouver in 2022, according to unofficial results on the city's website. In 2018, there were 176,450 valid ballots.

While the results of this year's election have not yet been certified, the available numbers suggest that roughly 36.3 per cent of Vancouver's approximately 472,663 registered voters cast ballots this year.

In 2018, turnout was 39.4 per cent...

That's already down from 181,707 in 2014. Maybe election day should be a public holiday?

While I know not everybody’s work schedule is the typical Monday-Friday work, I dare say more than 36% of available voters should already have Saturday off from work… ?

Anyways, given it’s a pretty clean ABC sweep, Sim should have no excuses not to move things pretty quickly. So we shall wait and see if he is able to address the crimes and health issues that Vancouver voters appear to have voted him in for.

Or just do mail-in/online voting.

Heh, touche. More advance voting days, maybe?

We'll see. I'm guessing the solution is more than just "hire more cops and nurses" (which itself may not even be feasible).

The last time I asked for a mail-in ballot, I got it a week after the election.

As for online voting, that seems like an excellent way to have 2030's electorate choose Boaty McBoatface for mayor.

Not a stretch at all. Eby, Heymann et al came out strongly and publicly for Stewart. Talk about poisoning the well for relations with ABC. Then there’s the obvious fact Stewart had crime and disorder around his neck like and albatross. The NDP will have to wear it in the same way, particularly catch and release for repeat offenders.

It should escape no one’s notice that the guy who managed the ABC campaign also managed Kevin Falcon’s. You can bet he’ll be at the wheel of the next BC Liberal or whatever they call themselves then.

Being granted a historic super-majority by the electorate on every single vote, Sim's takeaway from this election needs to be that Vancouverites have both been appalled and adamantly against all policy enacted by Stewart and the Clown Council. Drawing this conclusion could have been hard if the victory would have come by a small margin, but it was a complete and total absolving of the previous Mayor, Council, School Trust and Park Board and their legacy.

For this reason, there should be no respect for previously made decisions (mistakes), and Sim should work actively to undo as much as possible of previous Council's legacy. There is nothing but ruins left, so bulldoze those ruins and build everything anew.

Sim should also acknowledge that with this vote of confidence, he has Vancouverite's full support to do whatever needs to be done and if he fails to act, it will be all on him and ABC in few months' time. I hope there will be no resting on their laurels and consideration for "what Twitter thinks", as activist and special interest opinions don't matter a squat. I was really happy to hear him distance himself from the Twitter echo chamber group think in his victory speech.

I have absolutely no idea if he and ABC will be end up being successful, but at least they have been given all the tools and they just need to be brave enough to do what is right by the law-abiding tax-paying residents, ignoring any nonsense and social media outcry.
