Yes, they've announced it awhile ago. Will be an eight-court facility located near the G. Forbes Elliot Athletics Centre on the University of New Brunswick’s Saint John campus. This will be largest indoor tennis facility in New Brunswick.

Fantastic, thanks. I know that tournaments are usually held at Shamrock Park so great to see they'll have more flexibility in locations and year-round play.

I'm a little concerned the museum and elementary school will cost about as much as a tennis facility. Unless this is just for some early stage.

The projects listed on the website are pre-bid construction projects, including conceptual and planning projects in pre-design, schematic design, design development, and construction documents stages. So I believe they are very early stages. Most likely the value will increase, once it progresses in stages.

Did you notice the 120-million dollar one for a mixed-use development? That one says funding is from the city and the start date is June 2024. Hopefully that one happens, sounds like it would be a big development.

Well it could be phase 2 of Fundy Quay (or an unfortunate date for phase 1); the development at EastPoint or the proposed development off of Ashburn Road. My money is on Fundy Quay.

Port has a tender out to fill the northwestern slip with a gigantic amount of fill, in order to be paved over and used for containers, with the fill portion to be completed by the end of April. I presume the southeastern slip will be filled soon after, or maybe concurrently. Each is about 9 acres; when complete this will increase port storage capacity 500K TEUs to 800K TEUs.

I reckon they'll fill in the remaining 3 'ponds' southeast of these two ex-slips in the near future too.

Plus there's upgrades for RORO coming and two post-Panamax cranes, which was known.

Not sure if it’s imagined, but the Brookville gravel mountain seems smaller and more cut up. Wonder if they are providing fill so far. That will be a lot of dump trucks!

I believe it’s been coming from Debly’s construction on the hill off of Ashburn Lake Road.

Lantic site transaction is indeed under negotiations right now!

Apparently there is an unnamed 'frontrunner' as well as several other interested groups- including a named group from the Port of Savannah in Georgia. No idea if the frontrunner is the Port of Saint John (the city owns the Lantic site itself along with the parking lot along Vulcan), Cooke seeking to build an HQ, or some international group.

I had no idea the port was to acquire this site in exchange for Long Wharf in the dead Irving HQ plans until today. I assume it remains more valuable as industrial land than as office/entertainment/etc with the port booming. But man, no matter what you put there, you will need to majorly improve the ground itself. I was fishing off it a couple times this summer and the concrete section along its western edge (south of the Lower Cove terminal) is totally crumbling.

The port has said they want to bring in Ro-Ro. With some money and effort they could turn the old sugar refinery site into a place for car carriers to load and unload
Whatever it is I hope they fix up the site as anything is better than a empty lot right on the harbour.

RORO will be at the West Side facility as part of the current planned/budgeted upgrades (along with the less discussed planned twinning of rail lines from the port through Simms Corner). This is purely speculative on my part. But if there's at least one foreign port interested- a very serious one (4.5M TEUs a year in 2018, probably the most modern port on the Eastern Seaboard)- who knows what else could be afoot. Assuming either Port Saint John or the company affiliated with a port in Georgia get the land that would essentially eliminate the possibility of any new residential neighbourhood in that general area. Which IMO is a positive so we can keep laser focused on the streets we have in the south end that are in very poor condition and not only could be fixed up but rebuilt to increase the density.

If it is PSJ my question is why? They already have long wharf and the plot of land adjacent to the Jubilee Cruise Terminal. As what has been mentioned, this area needs a lot of work before anything could begin and a chunk of federal funding would likely be necessity for the port to kick start anything.

If it’s the affiliate from Georgia I’m curious to know their intentions. I could speculate but any idea I come up with like another container terminal seems wild.

Irving’s new paper plant is in Macon, GA just to the west of Savannah. My understanding is raw material is trucked from the west side mill to Macon. Perhaps there is a connection???
