In 1980 I attended a luncheon in the top floor Headliners Club, and overheard an out of town guest who was gazing out the window remark to his companion that the downtown looked “like a ghost town”.
He was right, as it seemed half of Congress Avenue businesses were boarded up at that time and the side streets not much to look at either.

I'm trying to decide if that's the crane I see for the Bank of America Center in front of the Littlefield Building or something else behind it blending perfectly with the Littlefield Building's facade.

Both of the photos above are the Austin I remember as a kid. It was so cool to see the gold building when we drove from San Antonio to see my cousins in Dallas.

Pretty sure the Sheraton Crest ,aka Crest Inn, was around by late 1960s. I remember it from when I lived here in the fall of 1969. I think the 1974 picture is cropped somewhere around the fire tower which is west of Congress by a block or so.

My best friend and his new bride honeymooned in Wilbur Clark’s Crest Hotel December 30-31st, 1966.
Met my wife-to-be who was the maid of honor at the wedding (I was best man). Proposed to her 2 weeks later.

Fascinating. Thanks for sharing. I can't believe they wouldn't want to incorporate the architecture into the apartment building...but it did say they wanted a "modern" look (albeit in the 1970s). Wonder if that screen will ever come down.

This was a thing in the 60's and 70's...covering up old facades with "modern" screens. Look up the Hedrick Building in downtown San Antonio.
