The Avenir Centre (and the Moncton Wildcats) are getting an organ (and an organist)!

Not sure how the tournament will be affected with the loss of 4 major sponsors...for now (Telus, Canadian Tire, ScotiaBank & Tim Hortons), but something concrete will have to be done in order to stop the bleeding.

Tournament will be run with no ads on boards, ice, or jerseys, similar to what happened in Edmonton in August. I doubt TSN gives up broadcasting - they need the eyeballs way too much and it's one of their flagship programs.

I considered going to games but won't be giving any money HC at this time. A shame that Moncton/Halifax is caught up in this circumstance at this time.

When this first happened, I proposed two solutions. Fire the CEO and president of hockey Canada and install Shane Doan and Trevor Linden. Or start a new organization and have it replace Hockey Canada. Ultimately it looks like the later may happen, as Hockey Canada can’t function without funds, and may end up filing for bankruptcy.

I was thinking of buying my package for the tournament but after this controversy I am not support this tournament not only because of the format of the tournament. Plus I messaged the mayor of Moncton that we forgo hosting the tournament in the city.

I get everyone’s anger over Hockey Canada, but we also need to realize that we are punishing youth and the many female hockey players who aren’t or weren’t involved in this. There is a way to punish those in the organization for what they did without punishing those that aren’t involved. Team Canada and the many others across the world shouldn’t have a tournament thrown out the window because of the actions of few. Those top brass In hockey Canada and those who had their crimes hidden are at fault, let’s not punish the many who did nothing wrong.

A new organization can easily step in and fill the gap on those concerns. In the end Hockey Canada is mostly just a middle person. A stubborn one at that. There is all kinds of programs that are already in place to help youth with registration fees. We simply redirect the funding to the new program. Likely there would be some initial hiccups as the transition occurs, but if you begin that in summer of 2023 that should minimize anyone falling through the cracks that relies on these programs.

I do tend to agree that we should find a way to keep the tournament running. Lots of work has been put into this, volunteers, city officials etc. Plus many people making travel plans. Perhaps find a way to redirect the profits from the tournament that would satisfy people. Hockey Canada is not bigger than the game itself, hockey will continue on with or without it, given the complete loss of trust at this point.

"NEW: Premier Blaine Higgs says New Brunswick government will consider cutting ties with World Junior Hockey tournament in Halifax & Moncton if Hockey Canada does not do more on sexual assault scandal. Says it would be a joint decision with Nova Scotia."

From Justin Trudeau

“It is inconceivable that folks at Hockey Canada continue to dig in. It's not like there's something extraordinarily special about the people at Hockey Canada that means they are the only people in the country that can run an organization like this," he said.

"They need to realize that if we have to create an organization, get rid of Hockey Canada and create an organization called 'Canada Hockey' instead, people will look at doing that."

Trudeau said that while the federal government "isn't in the business" of starting new hockey organizations, he is sure "there will be a vacuum filled up."

Province considers cutting ties with World Junior Hockey Championship

Quote:
"New Brunswick's premier says the province is considering cutting ties with the World Juniors tournament if Hockey Canada doesn't take stronger actions in response to a sexual assault scandal.

Moncton and Halifax, N.S., are hosting the tournament organized by the International Ice Hockey Federation from Dec. 26, 2022, to Jan. 5, 2023.

Blaine Higgs told reporters Friday at the legislature that the province has considered withdrawing its sponsorship of the event. He said a decision will need to be made by the end of the month.

"All considerations are part of the equation," Higgs said. "Let's hope it doesn't get that far."

"We want to have a real good assurance that the situation has been dealt with appropriately, so you don't see these sort of allegations or instances occur, because they're just not acceptable," Higgs said.

"We haven't received the confirmation yet that gives either my colleagues in Nova Scotia or myself that comfort."

Higgs said they need "concrete action" by Hockey Canada.

Asked what he'd need to see, he said "people-change, organizations have a different governance model."

"To date, we have not seen an appropriate action," Higgs said.

He wouldn't go as far as saying the head of Hockey Canada should quit.

Higgs said any decision to withdraw would need to be made with Nova Scotia.

Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston told CBC Friday he had no comment on the statement from Higgs. Houston said in a statement Thursday he was "deeply disappointed" by the ongoing scandal.

"Before the 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship goes forward, we need to see some meaningful changes that respect the concerns of Nova Scotians and Canadians," Houston said.

Hockey Nova Scotia said it is suspending the transfer of players fees.

Hockey New Brunswick has said it would wait for the independent governance review of Hockey Canada which will "provide recommendations about that organization and inform HNB's next steps."

The New Brunswick games will take place in the Moncton's Avenir Centre arena. The City of Moncton has yet to comment, despite several requests this week from CBC.

The premier's comments represent a shift from earlier this year when it was announced the province was successful in its bid to co-host the tournament".

Mayor Arnold just posted on her FB page the following regarding WJHC and Hockey Canada
Quote:
I have just issued this statement with Halifax Mayor Mike Savage:

(Oct. 7, 2022) - Halifax and Moncton have always been events cities and hockey towns and we shared the excitement of co-hosting the 2023 IIHF Men’s World Junior Championship. We believe we have the local expertise and experience to welcome the world’s best young hockey players to our cities, but we are deeply concerned about Hockey Canada’s lack of judgement and professionalism.

We look for meaningful changes within Hockey Canada prior to the World Junior Championship taking place in our cities.
As Mayors we have discussed our growing concerns as the Hockey Canada situation has unfolded and we believe accountability is paramount. We will be discussing this matter further with our Council colleagues and provincial hosting partners.

Mayor Mike Savage & Mayor Dawn Arnold

I suspect Hockey Canada will back down and that senior management will resign. The political and economic pressure on the organization is getting to be too much to bear.

But, if Hockey Canada remains obstinate, I foresee the WJHC being cancelled this year. I already have my tickets purchased, but, if this is the case, then c'est la vie.

It will be disappointing if we lose this once in a lifetime chance to host the tournament, but we will all survive if it doesn't happen.

Sometimes principles matter........

Similar hints were given for Scotiabank Centre in Halifax. Sounds like the announcement will be tomorrow.

Looks like the Shania Twain concert will be the first in "Dynamic" concert prices happening in Moncton.

At the moment, prices range from $110.95 to $260.95 plus fees (also add the new practice of charging 20$ extra for aisle seats), but with 9(!) presales those prices might be long gone when the "General" public gets their shot.

Not sure if Halifax will be the same pattern, as they are not using Ticketmaster, but given that they are both promoted by Evenko, they might try to get something similar.
