It was more that in the late 2000's/early 2010's Dianne Watts actually overruled Translink's recommendations to build Skytrain in Surrey by shoehorning the Surrey LRT plan into existence and therefore Translink policy through use of the newly formed Mayor's Council and Surrey's large influence on it. Doug McCallum didn't need to tell Translink twice to reverse that plan back to Translink's original recommendation of Skytrain.

I think that speaks doubly to Surrey's influence over Translink if Diane Watts was able to force through her policy during her tenure.

Can Surrey First change it back if re-elected, or are we already too far along for another big dumb switcheroo?

The first stage of construction bidding closes Nov 1 so they'd have to act real fast to stop it now.

I don't know how it is on the East Side but I see virtually no Kennedy Stewart or "Forward Vancouver" (or is he Progress Vancouver?) signs on the West Side.

The names of those two parties is going to trip people up. By contrast "A Better City" is much cleverer with their naming. ABC, simple to remember.

Does anyone even know who Mark Marissen is running with on that slate? At least the NPA has some kind of recognition but not that group.

Progress Vancouver. Since using Hector Bremner as a sock puppet didn't work, he's now opting to do the job himself.

As a DNV resident, I've now received 2 phone calls from CoV campaigns, a platform dump from Kennedy Stewart and a heavily leading pollster call obviously sponsored by a party.

Questions asked on the poll:
Do you support vacancy control?
Who's your first choice?
Who's your second choice?
Ken Sim hasn't attended a city council meeting in 4 years, does this disturb you?
Ken Sim wants to run the city like a business, does that worry you?
Ken Sim promised to hire 100 cops and health workers, does it bother you that he clearly doesn't understand city hiring practices?
The Broadway plan is going to level Clark to Vine and 2nd to 16th and build up to 3 20 to 40 story buildings per block, are you okay with this?
Age?
Income?

Wonder who sponsored this poll?

I'm seeing some colleagues coalesce around ABC just to keep TEAM out of council and most importantly, Mayor. Nightmare fuel to see Hardwick as Mayor, IMHO.

Odds are Stewart will win based on all the polling, but if enough "right"er wing people coalesce around Ken Sim, he could win.

I'd probably prefer Stewart over Ken Sim, but the democracy advocate in me knows that the "left wing/urbanist wing" in Vancouver is polling at 44% (Stewart + Marissen, forget what anyone says his municipal politics are closer to Stewart's than anyone else's) and the "right wing/conservative wing" in Vancouver is polling at 53% (Sim + Hardwick + Harding). Really, if the people's preferred candidate were in office, they would look closer to Sim than Stewart.

With a "weak mayor" system, it's more important to see who gets on Council; Sim or Stewart can't do anything if they're always outvoted.

My wife and I cast our ballots last night. All Forward and OneCity. It's time to give Stewart a stronger mandate with an aligned council that will actually support his motions.

As an aside, I was disheartened when I read through the platforms of three independent candidates for the school board and realized they are anti-LGBTQ+ and are COVID deniers. I thought the trend of far-right candidates running for school board positions was a US phenomenon?

I voted at City Hall yesterday. There were COVID deniers, WEF truthers and other wackjobs outside protesting.

One lady asked if I wanted her literature so I could learn what the media was hiding. I couldn't help but laugh and she said I must have already been programmed.

I don't why anyone would vote for the well-to-do Boyle and OneChitty. Despite their press conferences in Shaughnessy, it won't be those $6 million+ homes developers come for, it will be the last remaining "affordable" houses in Main, Fraser and Commercial that they assemble to make maximum profit of new development.

I don't agree with all their policies, but here's a chance to inform yourself! Here's the OneCity new housing policy.

It doesn't contradict my point. Boyle & Co happily set up their announcement in Shaughnessy giving the (misleading) impression that is where all these co-ops, social housing etc will get built.

Developers would build on the West Side if:
  1. The economics make sense, and
  2. Zoning allows it.
Council cannot do a lot about the first point, but OneCity's platform of allowing "six floors and a corner store" across the city would address the second sticking point.

This type of re-zoning is not part of Forward's platform but Kennedy had this to say in an interview with the Tyee about re-zoning single family lots:
Quote:
Pre-zoning — I think that’s where we need to go.
So I think that OneCity and Forward could not only cooperate to accomplish most of Stewart's platform, but that OneCity may also influence Forward to push even further with some aggressive housing policies.

If a house is worth $1M on the East Side and $2M on the West Side, there's every reason to believe a similar condo development (or whatever) would also be worth significantly more on the West Side.

Shaughnessy lots are huge.
