I also never knew that some Northern BC ridings over 250% more representation than they should have. The aim is 53,773 and some of the ridings up there only have around 20,000 people. Kind of fucked up in my opinion.

It is a balancing act; you want to get the population as close as possible to the preferred range, but you also need to take distance into account. Having one MLA cover the entire top of the province (for example) would be unworkable.

The entire northwest and northeast sixths of the province are single ridings already, I find it pretty hard to believe that Peace River North and Peace River South are more disconnected than Ft. St. John and Ft. Nelson. I also see no reason why North Coast and Skeena can't be merged.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northwest_Territories_(electoral_district)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nunavut_(electoral_district)

seems to work just fine for the Federal District of Northwest Territories or Nunavut.

so 1 person can represent an area as large and diverse as Northwest Territories ...... but not Northern BC ......... ummmmmmm errrrrrrrrr

I believe that Amazon isn't staying in the long term, the land will be redeveloped and they will move operations to expanded facilities at TFN. But I agree that the New West-Maillardville configuration is ridiculous, they really should have kept Maillardville with Coquitlam, and then given Queensborough back to New West.

Definitely, hard to understand why they keep North Road as a dividing line in the Lougheed/Burquitlam area instead of adding that to Burnaby East. Burnaby - New Westminster including most of Uptown New Westminster could be shuffled to ensure that the riding of New Westminster stays intact as one.

The riding of New Westminster is also the oldest enduring provincial riding up until this point from the first elections in BC until now, shame they want to end that streak from a purely semantic point of view.

Also "Surrey Central" needs a name change, that's way too confusing with "Surrey City Centre", considering "Surrey Central" is basically eastern Newton and western Cloverdale, something like "Surrey Serpentine" would make more sense imo.

Looking at the map again, just saw that Connaught Heights will be in Burnaby South.
That means New West will be in four different Districts.

Five actually. Part of Glenbrooke North will be in "Burnaby East" as well. That portion could easily be returned to New Westminster to eliminate the need for Maillardville. They've actually got a good mapping tool to redraw the boundaries which calculates the population of the riding. I submitted a comment with new boundaries entirely within New Westminster as much as possible.

Surrey East and Surrey Central are just bad ridings in general IMO. Both are made of bastardized chunks of Fleetwood and Cloverdale, I'd try to adjust Surrey-East, Surrey-Central, and Surrey-Fleetwood, into "Surrey Cloverdale", "Surrey-Fleetwood North" and "Surrey-Fleetwood South".

Interesting how little posting has been made of this, especially as Eby seems poised to insert himself into areas of municipal jurisdiction far more forcefully than any other BC Premier has ever done.

David Eby to be next B.C. premier as NDP disqualifies Anjali Appadurai from leadership race
By Richard Zussman Global News
Posted October 19, 2022

Former Attorney General David Eby will be British Columbia’s next premier.

The BC NDP executive council disqualified Anjali Appadurai on Wednesday night from running in the upcoming leadership race.

After a nearly four hour meeting, the executive reached the decision.

The party’s chief electoral officer, Elizabeth Cull, recommended the party executive disqualify Appadurai following an extensive investigation into complaints brought forward around the sale of new party memberships.

“The BC NDP Executive has voted to support the Chief Electoral Officer’s recommendation to disqualify Anjali Appadurai as a candidate as a sanction for violating the rules,” BC NDP President said Aaron Sumexheltza....

Appadurai signed up a lot of new members and came within a hairs breadth of taking over the party. Which of course is why they disqualified her!

The Dogwood stuff was really bad.

But, the NDP shoots itself in the foot anyway, as is tradition.

I can see it both ways. You don't use other parties in an internal leadership contest, and you definitely don't ask for their membership lists.

I don't think people would be anywhere near as sympathetic if it was a centre/centre-right leaning candidate trying to coup the BC NDP via support from the BC Liberals.

So glad the far left loon Anjali was disqualified.

Good luck Eby, I want to see that Zoning bill you promised.

Yeah, if it were Mark Marissen, they'd be calling for prison time.

Shame Anjali had to pick the Bernier route; she could've waited until the next federal election, and then she'd likely have gotten the riding over "House Flipper" Noormohamed. Now she's persona non grata.

I don't know why you hate that guy so much. In his recent Reddit AMA he basically straight up said he doesn't like the BC Liberals of 2022 and aligns most closely with the LPC. I wouldn't be surprised if he votes BC NDP.

That's funny I thought her policies would be right up your alley.
