Yeah, it's next to impossible to build a 35 metre high rise away of the main cluster in Chicago. Toronto has more than a thousand high rises away from the main cluster.

Chicago benefits greatly from its history. It's mostly mediocrity since 2000. Some are just deplorably bad in part to open air parking structures.

You have to account that Lake Onatrio, Lake Erie, and, Huron,Superior, Michigan are at different elevations. Ships use locks to get from one to the other. What if there weren't these locks?

Absolutely. Not comparing Port of Toronto to that of Montreal or Rotterdam…just saying….it’s called St Lawrence Seaway for a reason…

Montreal is on a river not a coast. St Lawrence seaway is just an extension….

Indeed. As someone who visits Chicago with some regularity the quality of new builds there is atrocious. Office projects are better but on the residential side I’d say most of what Canada is doing is nicer from a design perspective (not necessarily saying much!).

The parking structures that seem to be part of every project in Chicago are particularly bad and can be downright oppressive. The class divide in who takes transit is very apparent - unless you live on the red line north or Milwaukee part of the blue line.

The cool thing about the Chicago skyline is that you have a display of some of the tallest and most prominent buildings including AON and Prudential right up along the north edge of Millennium Park. In most NA cities, the tallest buildings are in the middle of a cluster surrounded by shorter buildings so it's hard to see their full vertical extent.

At one time I didn't care for the Chicago skyline specifically because it looks so highly planned. It didn't seem genuine and lacked the spontaneous, organic drama on display in most cities. I've come to appreciate it since however.

If Stantec isn't in the Edmonton shot, it and Ottawa CBD south of Wellington have a similar feel for sure.

Edmonton has an interesting downtown layout, with taller-ish and decently designed private sector towers centered around Churchill Square and City Hall, and a series of lower, more mundane Government (I assume) office buildings closer to the Legislator.
