Downtown Edmonton’s Warehouse Park to be timeless, elegant, flexible—by design
by City of Edmonton | Posted on September 15, 2022

Claude Cormer et Associés are rock stars in the world of landscape architecture. They’re also really good with sidewalks, grass, hills, fountains and art—renowned as experts in designing city parks where people instantly feel they belong.

“It is so amazing to see a park when there are people and animation, and kind of a great spirit. We love that. We create a sense of place, an urban refuge that feels safe and inclusive,” says Claude Cormier, Principal Landscape Architect at Claude Cormier et Associés.

^The only 'eyes from the street' on this park is from 106th street? Still dont get why the land for this park is not extended to either avenue, north or south. It's visibly blocked from jasper and the new LRT, and edged by alleys on most of its perimeter.

I really really don't understand the shape of this park extending over 107th street instead of just occupying the entire block bounded by 102nd ave, jasper, 106th, and 107th. It would be permeable on all edges, visible, wouldn't take out 107th street, would not have awkward boundaries, and would look/feel 'complete' in the city grid.

I assume with this setup any of those lots facing jasper ave next to BPs will face backlash in the future if anything tall is proposed on them for the shadows they would cast on the park.

The Parks in on the SW corner and it's by far the tallest tower around the immediate area.

So the S and SW corner of the park may not see a lot of sunlight. I wonder whether there is a diagram showing sunlight at noon, 3 and 5 pm?

Yup. Having tall buildings around this park is basically embedded in the Downtown Plan.

Warehouse Park: From parking lots to paradise.

Share your thoughts on the new signature park in downtown Edmonton!

When completed in 2025, Edmonton’s new downtown park will be larger than two football fields and include multi-use spaces and program areas. Located between 106 Street and 108 Street, north of Jasper Avenue and south of 102 Avenue and designed for all ages and abilities, the park will provide spaces for you to play, be active, relax and gather surrounded by green trees and a large open lawn. 107 Street will be closed to vehicle traffic and be transformed as a pedestrian promenade within the park.

Share your thoughts on the design at the pop-up event at NorQuest College on Monday, November 14 between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. or learn more about the project at www.edmonton.ca/WarehousePark.

Survey open until Dec 4th. Lot's of good features: off leash, playground, basketball court, water feature, fire pit (gas I assume), green space, seating.

https://www.edmontoninsightcommunity.ca/c/a/67BFciZf71e6BIqxZYszzE

The key for me will be regular normalized use, maintenance and patrols.

I do like the look of it filled with nice mature trees.

I like what others have said about having some benches/bleachers nearby the basketball courts.

My big concern, and maybe others can dissuade me of it, is that the park is for the most part going to be very unbalanced. I feel like the dog park, playground, & water features are going to be some of the higher traffic areas leaving the larger eastern portion much quieter most of the time.

Is there too much crammed into the western section? Maybe that is done to keep the bulk of the activity near the pavilion where the bathrooms and such will be, which might improve safety?

As a random thought I just had, and I realize there isn't much overlap or competition between the two, but it would have been nice to have this park finished up before they shut down Hawrelak for a couple years to at least soften the blow somewhat.

My main concern with the park is regarding safety, security and vandalism. Unless something changes significantly regarding crime and massive social problems downtown, the park will require a 24/7 security presence.

i think this plan is trying to do too many things and wonder if any of them will be successful as a result.

the dog park should be at the sw corner to provide as much distance as possible from alex decoteau.

the pavilion isn't big enough to program properly (ie it needs to offer ice cream in the summer, hot chocolate in the winter, indoor as well as outdoor space to enjoy them).

if basketball is going to be offered, at a minimum it needs to be full court marked like a school court "sideways" as well as lengthwise so it can host two games at once and have 6 informal hoops the rest of the time. the court should also have bleacher space or at least benches on the knoll.

where is the rental or loan space for basketballs and chess boards in the summer and toboggans in the winter, for bicycles or in-line skates?

if the 107th street connection is wide enough for food trucks etc., it should permit traffic - with calming measures like benches - etc. that provide better access and better security (like stanley park and queen elizabeth park, and central park etc.).

the "fountain" needs to be year round - as it stands, our summer days are too long for the "camp-fire" effect to be noticeable and there is no indication of what they plan to do with it in the winter when the days are short.

the playground equipment should be sized for adults, not just children, as adults will use it whether planned for or not.

the "attendants" need to be ambassadors wandering about and assisting with the programming (and security) and not hanging around inside the pavilion as glorified washroom attendants.

if this park is going to be successful, it needs to do what is done at the legislature grounds and churchill square and kinistinaw and louise mckinney and mckay school/🞵🞵🞵🞵 mather and michael phair and beaver house and railtown and ezio faraone, and alex decotau better if it is going to be successful. and if that means doing fewer things in order to do them better, that wouldn't be a bad choice.

from a fitness perspective, it would also be interesting to see if the city plans to program some of the fitness spaces/offerings as part of a "chain" that would go from one park to another and animate more than one of them as well as the streets in between with more activity.

Washroom pavilion should be along 106 street. Current spot looks very hidden for a structure like that, no roadway nearby and along the back of buildings. Feel like it would be much safer and have many more eyes being along a roadway and in plain sight. Doesn’t seem particularly safe in its current location.

I do like the 'shared promenades' to connect it north-south.

The new park plans look good for the most part, although I'm not that keen on the so-called "ornamental water feature" since I'm expecting an actual water fountain.
