It is still there and heavily used. They just replaced the surface as the old one was worn out. The football team will still practice and train there. The field and the especially the winter Dome gets a lot use by various sports, including intrmamurals, and the Dome in winter brings in a lot of revenue from rentals to outside groups. I would bet that they have watched Atletico play in front of 4-6 thousand fans and realized that the design of the South side stands really make for a great atmosphere even with a smaller crowd. That lower bowl on the South side + the club seats makes a perfect venue for these types of events IMO.

The reason they're playing at TD Place is actually because it wasn't feasible to host fans at the Lees Field while the construction of the new Lees avenue Health Sciences Faculty building is going on.

You are correct. Construction was the reason that the team originally started playing at TD Place.

However, the plan to return to Lees when construction is over may be ditched.. The team, HC et al, has told the university, and me, that they wish to continue playing at TD Place in 2023 and beyond. It looks like they may get their wish. Nothing is certain either way at this point. If it does not happen it will be because it has become to expensive.

P.S -the team played an intra squad game at TDPlace this past Sunday.

How many university football games per year? Anything that will increase usage of TD Place is good for the City, OSEG and Lansdowne as a whole.

From what I remember OSEG were very, very desperate to fill dates at TD Place Stadium and Arena, so this lines up with that desire.

Each team plays an eight game regular schedule played over 9 weeks--so there is one bye week. That means 4 home games at TD Place for uOttawa and 4 away games. On top of that, there is the possibility of a playoff game or two.

I have just learned that the extra cost of playing at TD Place this year is not born by the Sports Dept of the university. It is being charged to the construction costs of the building going up at Lees that forced the team to move the games.

When the construction is finished, the Sports Department will need to pick up the extra cost. It is not clear if they will be able and willing to do that for 2023 and beyond. Attracting a few thousand paying fans to TD Place, instead of the flies they usually draw, would help convince the university games to stay at Lansdowne.

The moral of the story----go watch the Gee-Gees at TD Place.

Went to an 8pm show at the Civic Centre Friday. Coming in from Gloucester, so driving was the only way to get in and out in a reasonable amount of time.

Drive went well until we got to Bank Street, where it was bumper to bumper. Being in a car, I didn't mind, but it was frustrating thinking that those who arrived by transit, or were taking transit as per usual to get in or out of the Glebe, were stuck in that same traffic.

The Glebe really needs a better transit solution, and Queen E. Parkway seems to be the only affordable option, and that could build ridership to the point where a Bank Street light-metro may one day be a viable option (+ over capacity of Trillium/Bayview).

I can't fathom how closing Bank to cars would work. It would be impossible to actually get there by car. THAT would be a "war on cars".

As an aside, walking down Bank felt more like a downtown than downtown itself. So many local retailers and restaurants, people on the street, a good mix of heritage and modern architecture. Minto's Fifth and Bank is a fantastic. They really nailed adding density while preserving the human-scale feel and it should serve as an example for the rest of the city.

The current construction on the canal bridge is making a traffic mess.

At some point we need to find a better Bank Street transit solution. Absolutely, we cannot close it to regular traffic. That will destroy what we are currently building on Bank Street as well as the surrounding neighbourhoods.

Ottawa doesn't have one single building even remotely close to a 'Mega Tower', so I'm not sure what you are comparing to. Bank St. definitely has come great mid-rise action going on, with the exception of Tamarack Flora, in my opinion.

What Bank street in the glebe need is to stop allowing cars owners to park on the street. this alone would clear so much of the traffic mess in that area.

I think they're referring to massing and step backs vs. lot line to lot line buildings.

In this example, I think Bank Street is doing it much better than Richmond Road in terms of style & design. Richmond seems but more imposing and like a dark canyon than Bank.

I think the difference is that the appetite and view restrictions make it so Richmond is viable to incorporate those towers. Bank is more central and it would be harder to implement those especially without LRT (which Richmond also will have access to 3 stations - which is where a lot of the height is proposed). Richmond has to increase the density and incorporate ground retail near the station. That's the best way to improve Richmond at it's current state (and Carling too for that matter - which will also need either BRT or a tramway via QED like many of us talked about).


Although I do agree with the current proposal with Lansdowne 2.0. That density is much needed for that area which can help push through better transit options for that area.
