Pretty sure even Quebec leaving would not make reopening the Constitution realistic. (i.e. Quebec would get its own Constitution, but the RoC would have to remain a monarchy with the British royals as Heads of State).

They could ask for Harry and Meghan to become their own particular monarchs. Just as there were the Austrian Habsburgs and the Spanish Habsburgs, there would be the British Windsors and the Canadian Windsors.

It amazes me that the two provincial parties in Quebec that are pro-sovereignty are doing so poorly and may be reduced to almost nothing soon. Then you have the BQ at the federal level which has quite a few seats and is still pro-sovereignty like it's the 1990s. And the BQ can't really do anything now and will be even more isolated if the PQ gets wiped out. I know that Quebec nationalism is still well and alive but the idea of voting to separate isn't popular today.

Every single BQ MP and PQ and QS MNA in Quebec has had to swear allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Normally the pro-sovereignty ones will choose to take their oath privately because of that.

You are correct that the French version isn't an exact equivalent to the one in English (contrary to what is often mistakenly inferred) but still, for francophones the French version is still definitely the more loaded of the two.

Only those francophones extremely attuned to the demons of Anglo-America would be aware of the true "radioactive" nature of the English word.

You may see this with other words as well, like the F-word which is thrown around all the time even in very polite company in Quebec.

There again - only the most anglo-exposed francophones recognize its true significance.

When my kids were younger we had party at our place with a whole bunch of families, and later in the evening we had music on, everyone was dancing and when Mony Mony came on all of the francophone middle class white collar parents started chanting "hey mother fucker get laid get fucked!"

The lone anglo (albeit married to a francophone) was totally freaking out.

True story. And this was in Gatineau - not in Chicoutimi.

I've been to hundreds of parties where that song got played. French or English, everyone sings the same refrain. It is true, however, that "Fuck: in French is basically "shoot" or "darnit" in English.
