I haven't had TV in about 10 years. Watching network ads is like a blast from the past.

Call me old fashioned, but I like having free Spotify with ads every few songs. Takes me back to simpler times. Still no political ads on Spotify though, missed opportunity.

Hoo boy, looks like someone from the mayor's team dropped a donor list. Quite the who's who of developers:

Pretty much every party publishes their individual donor list every year, so no huge surprise here.

Here's Forward Together's 2018-2022 donor list.

It's no secret that pro-development candidates attract donations from developers, the only secret was how much they contributed in fundraising power. Pretty interesting to see how much more powerful the Aquilini group is compared to the Bosas or Gillespie or the completely absent cheapass De Cotiis

Also Moe Sihota, expected: $25,000, received: $0. lmao

Yes but this is this years list and their targets. Not the published donor list from last time around.

But the people who do watch are statistically more likely to vote.

God help us if people are getting their election "news" from Instagram.

Yeah, the old people sitting in front of their TVs vote more.

I'm not sure I'd consider them to be more informed though.

I'd argue that 18-30 voter apathy will shrink if the housing crisis continues. It's one thing to complain about the problem, it's another thing to ignore the symptoms creating it.

Maybe. It hasn't for other recent elections.

Perhaps the 18-30 voter base will shrink faster.

There's one less bit of voting in Burnaby - we already know who our mayor will be as there's only one candidate.

Stewart gets raked over the coals in the Vancouver Sun.

Daphne Bramham: Vancouver mayor taps 'captains' of development industry to finance his campaign
Opinion: Despite promises of transparency, the self-styled anti-establishment defender of renters has turned to developers for money
Author of the article: Daphne Bramham
Publishing date: Sep 14, 2022

It is a who’s who of Vancouver’s lucrative development community, the captains of an industry presiding over one of the most unaffordable housing markets in the country....

...One column titled “Captains” has names of presidents and senior executives. Another column has goals for each captain to raise. Another, how much of the $270,842 total to-date each has delivered. Fundraising goals for the 37 ‘captains’ range from $5,000 to $110,000.

Even though Forward Together refused to confirm or deny the spreadsheet’s provenance, TEAM for a Livable Vancouver asked Elections B.C. late Wednesday to investigate.

TEAM noted that it is not accepting any personal donations from developers because it “did not want the perception that an industry regulated by city council” is also financing its election....

....it also speaks volumes about the public-facing campaign versus the private one being run by Stewart, who won election in 2018 trumpeting the need for civic financing reform and greater transparency.

A political-science professor specializing in municipal governance with a doctorate from the London School of Economics, Stewart has written so extensively about these matters that it’s an embarrassment of riches when one goes looking for quotes...

....In a December 2009 opinion piece in The Vancouver Sun, Stewart wrote favourably about Quebec’s law that prohibits donations of more than $1,000 a year and urged B.C. to “draft laws to stem the tsunami of money, some of it foreign, flowing into local election contests” as a means to “re-establish public trust” in the electoral process.

The government did that. Foreign, corporate and union donations are banned and personal donations are limited to $1,250 this year for Vancouver.

Ironically, Stewart mentioned that Raymond Louie, a Vision councillor in 2008, received $80,000 from a single donor.

Now CEO of Coromandel Properties, Louie is one of the ‘captains’ listed on Stewart’s spreadsheet who has delivered $2,500 and has a goal of raising $25,000 more....

Believe me... no smart developer would donate to TEAM, the anti-development party...

Next thing you know environmentalists will be donating to the Green Party and union members will be donating to the NDP and capitalists and business owners will be donating to pro-business parties...

In these people's minds, the politicians are chasing the money and not the other way around. It never occurs to them that maybe the developers are hoping to get someone who vaguely agrees with them in, and not trying to bribe someone to agree with them.

It's also just virtue signalling, do you think TEAM would refuse donations from small businesses and property owners, both being highly regulated by city council?

"In other news, the NDP has officially announced it will refuse any donations from oil and gas companies, and the Conservative Party has announced it will refuse any donations from public sector unions!"

So you’re saying Forward Vancouver is to developers what the Green Party is to environmentalists? IE a vehicle to achieve their goals?

House people? Yes. Solve a crisis? Yes.

In addition I'd say for someone who wants to build housing and make the most money the ABC and Progress would be the better donation options, rather than Forward and OneCity or even the NPA.

Forward really isn't too far off the Gregor/Vision group.
