Those are quite prevalent in Bellingham - various mall/supermarket/store parking lots have them.
Also of note Seattle has joined Portland and Chicago (cities recently visited - portland is the closest to the situation here) is armed security guards at the doors of certain stores in the downtown area.
I am surprised some business in Vancouver have not worked with off duty officers or armored car carriers to have armed security guards as well (although I am not sure about what is allowed legislatively here).
