I don’t think it is helpful to blast critics of the current FDR plan as being vandals and eco-terrorists, as our friend from New York City has done, or to infer that we are ignorant, "crazy," subject to "misinformation," and spreading unfounded "rumors." Over 5000 people recently signed an online petition asking the city to restudy the situation.
I think Inga Saffron is to be commended for wanting to probe into the FDR Park plan. But it is clear that she needs to look much further. For example, she quotes an unnamed person as stating that the areas being cleared are for a 50-feet-wide "haul road." Her own eyes should have shown her that is not true. The cleared area is many acres in size — far broader than the width of a road. And much more clearcutting is planned in order to grade the area for new recreational fields.
The issue in dispute is not the construction of additional wetlands but the plan to give about half the Meadows to 12 artificial-turf soccer fields, four baseball diamonds, parking lots, tennis courts, and all of the rest. While the goal of enhancing wetlands in the southern portion of the Meadows is laudable, the 30 acres of new recreational fields and buildings would only increase run-off into Shedbrook Creek. Inga Saffron is under the misapprehension that the new soccer fields will be “along Pattison Avenue, in the meadow, since that is the area that is closest to the Broad Street subway.” In reality, playing fields and tennis courts that are currently relatively close to the subway will be moved out of that area, and moved to the west and southwest section of the park, which is
farthest from Broad Street and the subway.
