St Vital Centre

https://www.bentallgreenoak.com/pdf/...tal-centre.pdf

Sportchek is moving to the new space next to Homesense/Marshalls by the new entrance and everyone’s favourite, Dollarama is opening up in the soon to be former Sportchek space.

I just about choked. Dollarama? In a prime central location in the mall? Across from Oomomo dollar store? Within actual walking distance of two of their other locations, and a direct competitor dollar tree in that radius?

Winnipeg will have to change its zoning bylaws to limit the amount of dollaramas in a certain radius before these things take over every possible CRU like thistleweed.

Dollarama is also opening in a new CRU just down the street at Dakota and Warde

There’s already a Dollarama at Dakota/Bishop, St Mary’s and Dakota, and a Dollar Tree across the street at the Dakota Plaza. This is a bit much.

Dollarama is starting to dominate the retail scene the way that Eatons did a century ago, haha.

Interesting that they don't have real competitors in that $5 or less space. I mean, I guess there's Dollar Tree and the independents but they aren't really even in the same league.

this is like when dollarama opened across from kildonan place in the old value village on regent.. i guess the business model works.. kinda like the saturation of the market with winners and marshalls being in close proximity to eachother as well.

All these dollar stores don't seem to really drive retail traffic yet at the same time they always seem to have customers in there. Also that they keep opening more locations seemingly right on top of each other suggests the locations are highly profitable.

I live close to a Dollarama (that is itself close to other Dollaramas) and while it's never packed, there are always people shopping inside. And unlike a supermarket, there are never more than a couple of staff on hand at any given time, so operating costs must be pretty low.

I find myself dropping in probably once every week or two to pick up some random thing or another, but always end up spending at least $25 once I get all the other items I regularly pick up there.

The margins are pretty good, as much of the stuff they sell probably has cost hugely below $1-2. What's the actual cost of a USB cable, really?

They don't do perishables. The have minimal staff. The off-brand stuff is off-brand in the biggest of ways. The on-brand stuff is discount/overstock leftovers. They refuse anything that adds cost to a transaction (no credit cards).

Much like Tim Hortons did some years back (remember when it was cash only?), Dollarama finally relented and started accepting credit cards. They even accept American Express!

I stand corrected. I guess they don't go out of their way to promote that though.

In a surprise move two failed and iconic Canadian retailers have formally announced their engagement.

MEC will soon be opening locations in three former Top Shop concessions in Hudson Bay stores in the GTA with plans to expand in across the country. As Winnipeg never really got a full Top Shop treatment other markets did don't expect to see much change here. It could though be the first sign that MEC is looking for ways to exit its Winnipeg downtown location. I have a suspicion when the move does happen it could resurface in the Kennaston Commons area.

Since MEC ceased being a co-op with all the CSR implications that usually brings, I've been expecting them to pull the plug on their downtown store.

They are pretty well the last bastion of the short lived downtown retail renaissance of the Y2K era under Glen Murray's watch.

Nothing says NYMBY better that complaining that you will for ever loose your view out the back window of....a massive parking lot.
