Always nice to see more of Victoria!

Here are a few pics I took of Trail, BC the other day. The Kootenays are actually full of small older towns that are very interesting and have good urban bones to build from.

Trail can be seen as a more rundown "working man's" Nelson, but it honestly has a lot of potential and many beautiful older homes and neighbourhoods.

Lets start with some pics from downtown:

These red covered stairways are throughout the town of Trail, and have somewhat become the city's symbol.

The Colander is perhaps one of the best pasta restaurants around! Trail has a long history for Italian immigrants (actually I have an entire family branch here that split from mine right after immigrating over 100 years ago that I have only met once)

The smelter looms large over the city but it has been the life blood of Trail for well over a century.

Now for some of the housing stock. Trail would actually be a good place to film for "small town America."

All my pics!

Anyways, Trail is a neat place to check out. It is often the hotspot in Canada (Warfield) and is a pretty nice summer destination.

Great photos of Trail. What an awesome old bridge. B.C. has so many cool little towns. I've hardly been to any of them.

Wow, those are beautiful photos of Montreal's skyline.

I did an estimate this evening on Triangle Mountain in Colwood. I noticed a clear view of Victoria's skyline so I took some photos. I wish I took a few more zoomed in photos as they were a little blurry. Still I think this is a great view of Victoria that I've not yet photographed.

Love the Trail photos, definitely not represented usually! Very much an interior BC town, for all the right reasons. I didn't realize the Italian thing, but the only person I knew from Trail actually had an Italian name (we were in elementary school in Richmond and he had moved from Trail, and then went back after a few years). But I never even clued in he was Italian until I read your post and realized he had an Italian name and that's tied to what you said lol

And really good Victoria shots, you show all the best parts of it. And that shot from the mountain really makes it look dense. And typical west coast, dense downtown surrounded by forest haha so good though

Seeing the Queensway shut down for five days for a bridge replacement in Ottawa is truly an eerie scene!

Yes Trail has a very rich Italian and hockey history winning the world championship not once but twice. Tying the two histories together would be Italian Canadian hockey players Ray Ferraro and Caesar Maniago.

One more photo that I took yesterday from Triangle Mountain in Colwood. The south end of Victoria and a neighborhood called James Bay.

great pics, although those angles of Ottawa are rather unflattering.. there is nothing to them that give a national capital essence if you will... very underwhelming from those angles.

If you're not in sight of Parliament Hill, Ottawa has no "capital city essence".

The National Capital Region has great beauty along it's waterways and in Gatineau Park, the area the 417 runs through is very dull

(Cross posting from the Fredericton thread, for national interest and regional representation as suggested by MonctonRad - thanks! Fredericton really is a gem and does get the details right in general.)

First time back in Fredericton in eight years! Very pleasantly surprised and reassured to see the Downtown doing fairly well.

The three storey red brick building on Queen and Regent was my place for six years in the late 2000s (1 bedroom, $650/month, never raised the rent all that time). Nice to see it still there intact and occupied

and all the storefronts full too! In fact it seemed like Downtown storefronts were all filled, with most stores that were around back then still alive and kicking. Clippermens where I got haircuts (Fox's was fine, just that it was always closed), River Valley Footwear for shoes, Savage's for my bike, Urban Almanac for my couch, Jonnie Java for java and Coffee and Friends for coffee and friends, Westminster Books... plus so many new ones opened up. Really seemed like things are thriving!

The Hilton Garden Inn was still a promise unfulfilled eight years ago - the parkade of course went in but many of us were cynical that the hotel would actually be built. But there it is! And it seems the Crowne Plaza and the Delta aren't hurting for business.

Fredericton always had a good variety of architectural styles and it's wonderful to see new additions to the mix downtown

The new Beaverbrook gallery under construction really does provide some interesting compelling contrast in the Legislative quarter

Again with most storefronts occupied and open, Queen St is still a great street

and really looking complete on the west end, with apartments/condos peeking out where there was one just an abandoned pigeon-filled warehouse

When I was on PAC back then we'd just approved the first brick building here on the right. I was at the time disappointed that the ground floor was just parking and not commercial space, but then again it made sense as it was still liable for flooding. Further development west on Queen was very much just theoretical, and it really is a pleasure to see it all worked out. The newer additions further west seem to have managed to fit in a restaurant and patio - I assume those few metres down the road provide enough standoff from the river?

On Regent, where the two storey older building with the wine bar was, the infill looks to have turned out well and completes that facade nicely, how the protrusion on the second and third floors line up with the taller building to the north and the older three-storey building to the south

Didn't see enough of the Officers Square plan to say if I like it or not, but I appreciate that it is a high profile location for a joint development between the City and First Nations, as a matter of reconciliation.

I also appreciate that the signage is all in plain language and not in bylaw jargon or planning gobbledygook

Transit seemed somewhat busier than I remember it for a Saturday afternoon (i.e. I actually saw people boarding). Still a mismash of branding and fonts and cases ("FREdERiCTON TRANSiT" - why?!). Putting the electronic destination signs in Sentence Case instead of yelling in ALL CAPS would be an easy fix though.

I like these new parking signs: instead of telling me when I can't park, tell me when I can. Much more clear; though what happens between midnight and 0700? (Aside: I used to park on Queen St overnight all the time. I remember one night they were snow ploughing, and the police did the courtesy of calling me at 3 am before they were going to tow my car! Super kind, and indeed faster than getting their tow truck down anyway.)

Water truck - super handy, and branded "H2O" so it's bilingual!

Skate park done and looking well used

And finally all those planned roundabouts are in. They got the application down just right I think: better than where I am now in Ottawa, where they do put the lane markers on the pavement, but not overhead. Essential for winter time when the road is snow covered!

Overall super impressed with Fredericton, it was a pleasure to come back after so long!

Yeah, Freddy's got a pretty solid downtown core that feels like it is well maintained. We don't have acres of surface level parking, and many of our downtown lots do have plans.

Most of our parking is actually more or less along the river, so it provides a bit of a spring flood break, and also keeps the sightlines to the water clear.

As the photo tour above noted, most of the core is filled, and we have lots of new projects that will keep it growing. The nightlife can be a bit sparse (after 5 basically) but Saturdays are busy.

The suburban Witless Bay Ecological Reserve is having a rough year. Avian flu is spreading throughout the island and killing thousands of seabirds. No colonies are expected to be wiped out, but it's putting a big dent in them. The puffin, if you've never seen them, is really small and cute. It flaps its wings SUPER fast, closer to a hummingbird than a seagull. Speaking of seagulls, the ones who don't frequent the dump can eat multiple puffins per day.

Ahh puffins

Was lucky enough to spot a whole colony of them in Iceland this Spring. They are truly one of nature's most adorable clumsy-looking creatures. Are they easily seen in Newfoundland?
