The Mcdonalds of Rideau Street has been revived, but this time... slightly different.

That was my first thought too.
I'm concerned about waste disposal and short term waste storage for that use on this site. If you don't share my concern, have a walk around behind a fried fast food restaurant during the summer.

Landscaping started. They planted 9 trees on the Chapel side and a bunch of shrubs

Fantastically suburban! Reminds me of the new Barrhaven towers.

Everything. The landscaping, the gaps between the stone work and ground, the dead façade, the general architecture and materials. This just looks like a suburban Ottawa tower project.

Hmmm, it just says Popeye's, no mention of fried chicken. Any chance it's Popeye's the supplement store?

Good point! I didn't even think of Popeye's supplement. Speaking of retail, Second Cup shows up on google map at this location (151 chapel Street)

It's definitely the restaurant, this brochure has a site plan with the Louisiana Kitchen logo.

The good news is that suburbanites will feel right at home when they go downtown.

Everything about this development is a bloody tragedy. The fact that this is one of the taller buildings on Rideau and is clearly visible from multiple angles of the city makes it even worse.

Even the marketing on their main website is a joke:

"There are two sides to every story, this is the perfect example. Not a tale of two cities but rather, one exceptional rental residence with two complementary settings. There's the urban side and the natural side, but the most import side of this story is yours...."

Very disappointing. The Chapel Street elevation should've been all active frontage with entrances that follow the grade of the street, as was normal for centuries until we let cheapness set in. The Chapel Street side therefore becomes a suburban wasteland with a blank wall camouflaged by useless shrubbery. Trees, yes, but shrubbery to hide architectural failures should always be seen as a sin in an urban setting.

Like so many other projects... This building has decent bones but was styled by Stevie Wonder.

All they had to do was not have those moronic crosses... Throw some nice coping or parapets over the lower podium in a contrast color. Either light gray or the same beige... and for the monolithic slabs of endless charcoal brick... window lintels and maybe 1 or 2 bands as the tower goes up with a matching parapet at the top. EZ. I can't imagine that would even have an impact on the cost. Just at a certain point you change the color of material you are using.

I do like the large format block of the beigey color. This building could have gone from zero to passable with such minor stylistic changes. I don't get it.

Surely the person who rubber stamped this design must see it in it's completed form and scratch their head. Is it RLA all the way or was this a summer intern learning how to use Sketch-Up?

Our favourite new building is nearing completion. May they never break ground on tower two.

Rideau could be a genuinely interesting street if the builds weren't so awful.

The only redeeming quality may potentially be the mix of retail tenants if they increase pedestrian traffic and help to animates Rideau at this corner, I haven’t walked by in person in a few months, but are the street level storefronts as bad as the tower?

We should start a change.org petition for them to paint over the damned crosses. It would still be ugly but it would at least be lest offensive.
