Hoarding off the new Cartier store at Alberni and Burrard, enlarged former Hermes space. The remaining floors of the original building detract from the new facade and make it look rather busy IMO.
Photos by me.

I wonder how much they saved up front and may lose down the road by not simply offering to renovate the facade of the units above them.

Square peg and round hole come to mind on the interface between the top and bottom on the corner.
The chevron pattern of the new brick facade (plus the ombre/fade) adds to the busy-ness of the building
as it conflicts with the original courses of brick.
It looks like the designer worked in isolation without accounting for the context of the existing (and remaining) brick pattern.
... and who tops off a stylish facade with metal flashing?
It would have looked better with a simpler facade - like all black granite.

Might have looked better if the flashing was black?

Why did the Hermes store pack up again? Didn't they just open up a few years ago? What a waste.

Vancouver Sun article said that old location was open since 2006 and they never ever did any thing with the facade.

I think it's only been a fairly recent trend to alter the facade of a on-street storefront when it's part of a larger building or complex.
I think it's a take from malls where storefronts are individualized, and I think it only works well where there is a podium roofline.

Glad to see that the Lucid facade at 701 West Georgia reverted to a facade that blended with the dark tower, compared to the contrasting white of the Michael Kors shoe store that was there before.

In 'they didn't change the facade' news, the Dollarama on Granville is open. It's bigger than it looks as it has two floors. Like the Denman, Cordova and new Broadway stores, it's mostly self checkouts.

I believe the Burnaby Sungiven was a Westminster Savings

Ah yes of course it was just the facade change I was remembering. Still seems like a waste to do all that and then move pretty much right away.

Cartier is now open and I think it looks great. The rounded corner, like Tiffany across the street, make a nice entry to Alberni. The hoarding started coming down about two weeks ago, around the same time as the hoarding around Lululemon started to come down. The envelopes on the sides of the new Apple Store are also coming down.

I wonder whether that means the Bay parkade Dollarama will be closing soon?

A leasing PDF (only the cache on Google would load) mentioned 9,513 square feet for the school space back in 2012. But that leasing page mentions 17,571 SF (though the PDF also differs with only 13,513). Dollarama was open in 2012.

If Dollarama isn't around 8000 square feet then this theory won't hold

I think the 17,571 includes the two smaller 2,000 sq ft stores on Seymour. The 13,513 is just for 668 Seymour, which is the basement. Both Cloud Nine and Dollarama had 668 Seymour as an address, but the brochure seems to only show the Cloud Nine space. I guess we'll see if the store closes, and that might depend on how much trade Granville takes from Seymour.
