I will admit that I have always had a soft spot for Kelowna, but I feel it deserves a better reputation than it has on this forum, especially given the transformation that has taken place over the last two decades. it has a legitimately interesting and fun downtown core these days with just enough older bones to build upon, there is a surprisingly large amount of pedestrian activity, it has wonderful parks and beaches surrounding the downtown core and elsewhere in the urban area, and the setting is amazing.

Also I argue that even though it is far from perfect, and even if you are one of those that hate it, it has a unique flavor among Canadian cities.

Metro Kelowna's population balloons to 229,400

Kelowna maintains its status as Canada's fastest growing metropolitan area with a recent population bump to 229,400.

"The data is lagging, so that 229,400 is Statistics Canada's annual population estimate for 2021 for the Kelowna CMA (census metropolitan area)," said Krista Mallory, the manager of the Central Okanagan Economic Development Commission.

When Statistics Canada released census numbers last year, Kelowna was the fastest-growing metropolitan area in Canada with 14% growth from 194,892 in 2016 to 222,162 in 2021.

To jump from 22nd to 20th, Kelowna leapfrogged both St. John's and Barrie, which both now have populations of around 213,000.

With the latest 229,400 estimate, Kelowna may be able to soon beat out No. 19 Sherbrooke, which had a 2021 census population of 227,398. (Sherbrooke's updated estimate from Stats Can for 2021 isn't known.)

Thanks guys! Hope to be back in Kelowna again next year or the year after. I feel its often undersold on the Canadian section of the forum, it lacks the shameless booster many other places have (such as Calgary, St. John's and anywhere in Ontario).

If Kelowna can maintain its population growth advantage over Sherbrooke and Regina it should come close, if not actually, eclipsing both by the 2026 census to be the 18th largest CMA.

Wow. Good to see more rental heading downtown. Although I do wish there was a retail component in this development.

Great looking project. I agree about there needing to be a retail portion though. At least more around this project would be good. I'm starting to wonder when Downtown Kelowna will see another large grocery store come in. The Safeway is now getting to be quite far away for this higher density residential portion of Downtown. I could imagine an Urban Fare or something similar making sense in this area. Something like Highgate Village Shopping Center in Burnaby would make sense nearby.

I do agree this area needs a grocery store. The business would have steady clientele and it would help reduce congestion from neighbors having to drive away to get their staples. If the city is so strong on densification to help reduce reduce climate impact this should be a priority. The city should work on attracting those necessities people need to live without having to get in a car. If the city was successful in attracting UBCO downtown then perhaps they can be successful in bringing a grocery store as well. I remember when Ellis Parc was going up there was rumours that a grocery store might be interested in taking over the retail component. But then again the source was the sales rep from the developer so.... ������♀️

What’s happening, if anything, with the Coast Capri hotel/mall redevelopment? Seems it’s been crickets! I haven’t been to Kelowna properly for a few years.

No idea. There was a lot of noise about it a few years ago, but it seems to have gone quiet.

I almost wonder if we see a first tower application come back with more height/density. Everyone seems to be trying for more these days.
