Others have mentioned the possibility of even more expansion north of what is being built. How would that work? Delta has much of Its service area there, including the large traffic tower. Would they just demolish and move, if in-fact the airport needed to expand again?

SLC's master plan believes a third concourse is 20+ years out. About half of the tunnel to the future concourse will be built as part of the current redevelopment. After the current project is complete they will focus on moving the fire station, fuel depot, and Skywest Hangar. Moving Delta is further out. Even when they get to that concourse they will initially only build the western half, so Delta's hangar is in no immediate danger.

Why is KUTV making stuff up? "Once complete, it will also feature a shorter path to Terminal B, a 0.6-mile stretch of hallway that has become famous among airline travelers."

The current tunnel is only 0.2 miles, not 0.6 miles long.

They are adding the extra distance to walk down A and the back to the center of the future B. Which nobody does (the second part) since there are no gates built that way yet.

Concourse D?!!

KSL's article on the future of SLC even teases the possibility of a Concourse D.

Construction on Concourse C could be triggered as soon as the end of the decade, or as late as 2037. The magic number we need to reach is 32.6 million passengers.

They mention that "there is some "consideration" for crews to extend the central tunnel construction beyond Concourse B early to speed up the process for when construction begins on Concourse C. This would also clear the path for a train system to open early, though it still wouldn't begin service for about another five years."

I'm confused as some of these numbers directly contradict the master plan. The master plan projects that even in the most generous growth models Concourse C won't be needed until after the 20 year planning period. Plus as I remember the master plan mentions that the approach area is constrained by the mountains and acts as a physical cap on landings. The plan believes that traffic would be hard capped at ~36 million because of this. The master plan actually specifically states that Concourse D will likely never be needed within the functional life of the current airport. I really don't understand where this guy is getting his numbers.

Growth isn't constantly linear, SLC won't get that big unless another major airline opens a hub here, which is unlikely in the near future. Prerequisite projects for concourse C are already underway, just as they started prerequisite projects for the current airport in the 2000s. Work on that concourse would likely begin in the mid 2030s at soonest.

I'll be damned if they start on a Concourse D before 2050.

I'll post some sources off the master plan later tonight when I'm off work.

I don’t believe it!! They are going to build new concourse D. I’m actually a big surprised! Later for next decade, they will build new concourse C and D. They growing more!! More people who flying to/from SLC. Still have more demand!

Salt Lake City's Aviation Plan is complete bunk.

I would love to find a copy of the report KSL is quoting here, because it is nonsensical garbage.

The Airport Master Plan prepared by RS&H in November of 2020 and updated May of 2022 is at complete odds with what is being said in the KSL article.

Here is a chart with RS&H's findings about facility requirements.

By their estimates Concourse C likely wont be needed until between 2057 and 2062. Note that Concourse D wont be needed until 2077!

They elaborate, pointing out that the airfield (with improvements) will only be able to support enough daily traffic for Concourse C.

This paragraph is the real icing on the factual cake.

The airspace, airfield, and terminal infrastructure would not be able to support a Concourse D which would bring SLC up to the size of ATL. Furthermore they point out that even if Concourse D is EVER needed, they can still develop the land it would occupy because any possible need is so far out that new structures would live out their functional lives before Concourse D is needed. The existing terminal will have outlived it's design life before Concourse D is needed.

I don't have a clue where Salt Lake City is getting their numbers or the delusion that they'll need Concourse D so soon. The master plan makes it clear that we'll all be in assisted living or 6 feet under before SLC could possibly need 4 concourses. I see a future of growth for SLC but never will we need an airport the size of ATL.

EDIT: I found the document that was presented to the City Council. It is the same document I quoted and linked earlier. Still no idea how they are saying Concourse D could happen in the 2040's when the damn document they are citing says 2057 at the earliest for Concourse C. They also ignore the fact that the airspace can not accommodate that much traffic.

2050, Salt Lake City: Almost 40 years from beginning the airport redevelopment project SLC international has achieved 346 gates. SLC has been the largest airport in the world since it passed Atlanta in 2037, now SLC International boasts more than double the gates of the former largest. Regarding the longevity of the redevelopment project, airport director Bill Wyatt stated "We kinda forgot where to stop so we just kept going." SLC is expected to become the first airport in the world to achieve 500 gates in 2069.

Progress on South Concourse East. Hard to get a good view of North Concourse East without being through security, so that'll have to wait until I have a flight.

Looks like they are proposing to construct 16 new gates in Concourse B East instead of the previously announced 9!
