I have some doubts about that water-skier picture. I'm sure you could waterski there, but the North Atlantic is pretty cold and people die in it from exposure pretty quick. I'd be wanting a full insulated wet suit to be doing that. Is it that much warmer from the Newfoundland coast? I would assume a bit just because its harbour, but still.
You can go in there in the summer. I mean, I wouldn't for pollution reasons (although maybe that's me showing my age -- I haven't lived there since 1995), but you can. I have gone in the Arm on a hot day, and swimming off MacNab's island. It's probably 19-20 degrees this time of year.

People swim in the ocean pretty much every day commencing, likely, some time in June. Is seems nearly everyone buys into the myth that the Pacific is so much warmer than the the Atlantic but the truth is that, in general, the North Atlantic is, per degree of latitude, about 2 degrees warmer than the North Pacific. This time of year, on the west coast of North America, you would typically have to go south of San Fransisco to find ocean water warmer than that surrounding Nova Scotia.
I don't personally find the water warm enough to be comfortable since I'm spoiled by swimming in lakes and the Northumberland Strait growing up, but it certainly isn't cold enough that you're going to die just because you fall in. In fact I have personally gone in the water and survived it.
And it isn't high in pollution now that the sewage treatment plan is there.

So a few degrees warmer than St. John's. I dipped my feet in Conception Bay a few times in the summer months, but that was enough. Still ridiculously cold.

I'm used to Ontario cottage country lakes. I think the people swimming in the lakes fed by The Alps runoff I spent as a kid would find it decidedly warm.

The Pacific around Tofino is cold. I took some surfing lessons one year and it was full wetsuit required for the lessons.

The North Atlantic is definitely warmer than the North Pacific and by large. Right now you’d have to go to about halfway between San Francisco and L.A. to find water warmer than in Nova Scotia. That said, people swim in the ocean all the time over there and don’t die.

Oh wow. Guess it was August when I took my dips. And like 28 years ago. Still, it was refreshing, although back then you knew to get out pretty quick or you'd get a rash or worse.
