Only one of them is. The east sidewalk is, when open, accessible to bicyclists and pedestrians (and it's a nightmare for biking); the west sidewalk is, when open, awesome because it is only for bicyclists to use.

and is not any wider than the pedestrian walkway of the viaduct. There's at least that. Cyclists could probably choose to share the pedestrian pathway unless LA pushes some archaic law to prevent that.

If it is classified as a sidewalk and/or marked 'pedestrians only' then bicyclists cannot legally use it.

Anyway, there's projected to be 15,000 people for the opening of the bridge. That number should be a sign to the city how important and monumental this space could be and to get the park and landscaping right as a public space.

This is an exciting infrastructure project, and the park specifically is much-needed in that part of the city. I will be out of town when it opens but I am eager to walk and bike the viaduct.

I'm guessing people won't really speed down this bridge. They didn't on the old 6th St. Viaduct, and they don't on the other bridges just north of this.

I don't know if you guys maybe aren't familiar, but people in Boyle Heights/East LA generally don't drive fast.

Here's a video someone took of the ribbon cutting. You can see the lighting on the arches cycle through different colors, so I'm thinking that's why in some of the earlier pictures I posted of the bridge lit up in red/white/blue, the lighting looks a little off, because the picture was taken in mid-color change.

I think we all got your message by now.

The bike path has a wide center lane and it would be easy (plus cheap) to replace the plastic bollards or low rubber stoppers with a so called "Jersey barrier".

I thought the bridge speed limit will be set at 35 mph. So why would people drive 80 mph?
Most bike lanes in L.A. (like the on on 7th street) have zero protection.

I don't think it's perfect but it isn't a huge or costly deal-breaker.

Pictures really don't show how massive this bridge is. Especially driving on the 101 from the East LA interchange. As I made the banked curve under the bridge, my first response was WHOA, i think a lot of people were saying the same since traffic noticeably slowed down with view of the bridge but picked back up right after.

Nope. I like the bridge. But it's apparent and hard to ignore if you're avidly reading the reviews and don't have your head buried in obsessive boosterism what the prevailing criticism coming out is now that the bridge is done. Rather listen to discussions of mitigations and solutions and public sentiment from sections of society this project will serve than cover my ears.

Dude, I know 14 people who walk and ride their bikes in DTLA. 11 of them were at a party I had last night. 9 of them loved everything about the bridge the other wished something about in a couple of spots the rails distract from the view. So believe what you want…most people who complain sit in at home with their boring lives and critique and try to dismantle everything on the internet.

Beautiful indeed!

This evening I drove across the new 6th Street Viaduct. So many others had the same idea, haha! But it was worth it. It was like a cruising party. Lowriders and everything. Even a guy on a horse. You know, porque es Los Ángeles.

I went and checked out the bridge today as well. Some shockingly shoddy craftsmanship, but the energy was fantastic. Truly felt like our city came together as a community to celebrate the opening. Afterwards I walked around the Arts District and got dinner at Yangban Society (wonderful meal). The area is really starting to feel like a neighborhood, and Kodo, the upcoming hotel in the old fire station adjacent to Yangban Society, is unbelievably gorgeous looking.

vids & photos of dtla & other cities helps give a fuller perspective of things. It makes you realize that everyone is keeping up with the Jones & there's nothing new under the sun.

For ppl into skylines & who like to judge new projs in dtla as objects on a highrise chessboard, I've seen cities I've never heard of, such as on the coast of northern brazil (recife), that you'd never suspect would have so many large towers. Everyone is in it to win it.
