There isn't a single fact in this entire commentary.

Unfortunately the people that run our city does not see value in maintaining flowerbeds or the boulevards. We are really looking unkept this year. I have voiced my concern with the city but it seems to fall on deaf ears.

Same thing is happening in Vancouver this year. Different priorities, budget and possibly environmental benefits behind the change.

^In some areas ok, but these are major planters along the heart of our Main Street and they simply have been left empty and have become trashcans.

A visitor from Halifax's recent travel review:

'Currently in downtown Edmonton. Way more bleak than I realized. Staying in the Quarters district at a relatively nice, relatively new hotel. Nearly every window on the ground floor is smashed out. There is a nicely landscaped but completely (like, 100%) deserted pedestrianized street adjacent to the hotel, however, there are tents in every alleyway and random nook, out-of-it people sitting on the ground screaming at each other, people wandering around unaware of their surroundings and unable to walk in a straight line, with others dancing exuberantly around them, hopped up on stimulants, equally unaware of/indifferent to their surroundings. A guy passing us on the sidewalk randomly started taking his pants off. All of this was in broad daylight on a weekday in what is ostensibly a "vibrant" neighbourhood. Halifax's encampments look like a hippie utopia in comparison. This place reminds me of an angrier version of the DTES.'

Haha quarters is not any sort of neighbourhood. It's parking lots, expensive infrastructure and a dumping ground for all our social ills.

Unfortunately this is a very fair assessment of the area. So sad that they have this impression of our city, but it is the reality and I don’t see it changing anytime soon.

I'm sure if someone stayed in a hotel right in the DTES they'd have the same impression. Maybe do some research on the neighbourhood you're staying in if you've never been to the city before.

So we are blaming the tourists for not picking the right neighborhood now? I know friends/ family, investors, and colleagues who have stayed in the JW and Fairmont that have had the same unfortunate experience with our downtown waking down Jasper, 104st, 108st, etc. Heck, I have had the same experience living here regardless where I am downtown and time of day.

If I go to a restaurant and receive a cold hamburger with hair on my plate is it my fault for reasonably expecting a decent meal too?

Stop blaming the customers of Edmonton aka the visitors we are trying to attract for not doing more than reasonably expected due diligence on our downtown and maybe point the finger elsewhere.

There is a risk in any city that if you book a place without looking into the location that something like this would happen...especially if you seem to be getting a good deal. I've been there before too.

Are there issues downtown generally? Sure. But it seems a bit disingenuous to me to suggest that this experience would be equivalent at the Fairmont or anything within downtown proper. Would there still be poverty and addiction? Sure. Are there places to point fingers for those issues? Absolutely. Did this person do any reasonable research into where they were staying? If they are referring the the Quarters as an "ostensibly vibrant neighbourhood"....doubtful.

If you're eating at a restaurant knowing full well that it has piss-poor reviews, empty tables and is on the verge of closing for good then I'd say yes it's your fault.

i think you missed the mark completely on this particular criticism CMD UW...

the hotel in question is a hilton double tree, not a dtes flophouse.

it gets decent ratings on a google search.

it looks decent on current google earth views both in plan and in street mode.

its a single block to canada place, the federal government's main presence downtown.

it's a single block to edmonton's main convention centre.

it's located on one of edmonton's prime streets.

it's within easy walking distance of a major park - louise mckinney - as well as the RAM, Winspear, Citadel, City Hall, Sir Winston Churchill Square, our main library, all of which are featured tourist destinations.

it's in a location that is prominently featured on the city's website and promoted on numerous other sites for everything from the public art on the armature to the farmer's market.

expedia rates it 4 stars out of 5 with decent reviews/trip advisors a 3.5 with admittedly mixed reviews which is typical for trip advisor (i've seen terrible reviews for everything from the chateau whistler to the savoy in london)

if you've never been to the city before, there's no reason a reasonable amount of due diligence research would have you reconsidering a stay here vs anywhere else downtown.
