It really depends on your level of commitment to a national highway system, The US found a way, even with some difficult mountain passes, particularly in Colorado. Where there is a will, there is a way.

I also think there should be a divided TCH in northern Ontario as well, connecting to Manitoba.

This is nation building. Areas of the country connected by a national highway system suddenly become much more attractive for development. Right now northern NB is a bit of a backwater. If it were connected to the QC autoroute system, and the Maritime freeway network, that might change.

So I wasn’t the only one thinking of extending freeway N.B.-11 towards Quebec. I’d put it at Mont Joli instead of Rimouski though.
As for something like A11 (or A95) through Matapedia Valley… hmm… given that MTQ allows maximum 5% uphill and 7% downhill on new freeways, it may be doable. Difficulty level may be on par with punching something like Highway 417 along Lake Superior Shore.

The highway that was proposed starting in Sherbrooke and building a bridge across over to Maine then down onto New Brunswick should get more attention soon before I die. Would greatly reduce time it takes for commercial trucks and visitors wanting to get into Montreal or Ottawa quicker and vice versa

The current border is a resolution between both US and British claims.



The British wanted control over a road connecting Halifax and Lower Canada, and the Americans ceded land on the basis of holding onto the remainder. As you can see, US claims went as far north as the St. Lawrence. Other than maybe making highways more convenient a hundred years later there really isn't much worth fighting over in Northern Maine other than trees, trees, and more trees.

I don't think there are any major bridges needed on the route between Sherbrooke and central-northern Maine that is being proposed.

In a direct line going east from Sherbrooke, pretty sure the Canada-US boundary is a land border.

My OCD just wants the border to continue as the 45th latitude.

There is a similar “silly” border that slices through the peninsula south of Delta, BC that leaves Point Roberts as an isolated outpost of the USA.

Apparently Stores in Whitehorse are limiting stock. If they have any. the Alaska Highway west of Watson lake was washed out and will be a few days to get it open again.

According to this article, it washed out on July 1 and reopened today.

Apparently trucks were diverting by way of Dease Lake, but were still delayed. It's amazing how quickly shelves emptied, though, considering there was a diversion. Perhaps residents panicked and stocked up on all the food when they heard the highway was washed out?

The Trans Labrador Highway is now COMPLETELY PAVED from end to end.

The official opening was today.

As for the distance between gas stations, the article they had on the CBC late evening news last night showed a dignitary being interviewed on the roadside, with a sign in the background saying something to the effect "next services 295 km", so I imagine you would have to be mindful of your gas situation.

BTW, I'm pretty sure the road on the Quebec side from Baie Comeau to Lab City remains unpaved north of the Manicouagan Reservoir, which would be several hundred kms.

Finally, I see the name of the NL transportation minister is "Elvis Loveless"

The article on Rte 389 in Quebec indicates about 170 km of gravel in two separate sections. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quebec_Route_389

My brother drove up to Lab City once and I knew about the graveled section.

Really, it should become a priority to pave this road. It connects Labrador with the rest of mainland Canada, and should be considered a national highway. I would have no objection to the feds paying for a large portion of this project because there is very little on the Quebec side once you get north of Manicouagan.

MTQ has been realigning parts of 389 and widening the curves in some spots, so there’s that.

Autoroute 85 Update (July 3 2022) Northbound
Section 1 & 6 : Completed, 4 lanes
Section 2 is completed and in service but only with 1 lane per direction for now, I imagine this will be the next section to be put into service with 4 lanes and it will be soon.
Section 3, 4, 5 & 7 are in the phase of leveling the land and building viaducts. I would say the highway is 35-40% complete.
