Record numbers right now, but they are about to more than double that record in the next few months, the amount of highrises in the pipeline in Ottawa is insane.

More than double? — hell. Ottawa is just booming!

Yep that was a sad day. You could see the spire of that church coming in from the Pontiac. Stupid arsonists.

PVM reminds me of the 60's colossus the PAN-AM building, hulking over Park Avenue.

I kind of always thought PVM deserved to be 200m+ though. 188m seems a bit of a let down.

I agree. It is too hulking but also too short for its breadth.

Yeah, PVM should have been 240-275m. Like a lot of height limit cities, Montreal doesn't really 'get' skyscrapers, and assigns all of their potentially overbearing qualities to that one metric, distorting the overall result.

240 to 275 metres is a 2020 number. There was no China. There was no Middle East. There wasn't a Chicago. PVM was the largest or close to the largest tower when built. It was also one of the tallest. Montreal was ahead of the pack in the post war skyscraper boom. One wonders if they started five years later.

Montreal was considered the world's second tallest skyline for a very short period in the mid 1960s, before Chicago went on a tear (and then, Toronto).

CIBC Tower (1962)
Place Ville-Marie (1962, 8 months after CIBC tower)
Tour de la Bourse (1964)

Each of these were the tallest buildings in Canada and the British Commonwealth when completed

I think Place Ville-Marie was also the tallest building in the British Empire or Commonwealth and one point, and may have been the tallest building outside of the USA as well.

Will stand corrected if not true.

Was the height limit established in part to the towers built in the early 1960s? I'm thinking these towers may have been over 200 metres were they designed around the mid 1960s (and the height limit wasn't established yet.
