Moving the discussion over here from the Downtown Updates.

So if you didn't see or smell it, the Value Village over at Victoria and Hastings went up in flames around 10pm last night. Buddy of mine was wondering what the heck all the sirens were about, went outside and saw smoke, went around the side of the building and welp, there was our tech boutique lit up like it was a movie.

Not wanting to speculate too hard on this, but the fire seems to of started in the basement under the Housewares department. Down there is the electronics, the bathrooms and the donation receiving so the guess is that either something was left plugged in after closing, something was being charged overnight that had come in as a donation or there was something volatile in the evening's donations that were to be sorted the next day, like a "pillowed" lithium battery.
It's a shame to see that place go as I was quite regular there and there is no other similar stores for quite a distance. The next store is 55 blocks up Victoria and a new one is getting set to open on South Granville.

The Fairmont Gucci is now open, and it looks like they might be getting ready to start the major retail renovation at Thurlow and Alberni. (I wouldn't be surprised if another Kering brand eventually moves in.)

As far as I know, the restaurant is staying where it is. All I was told that Dior and LV are expanding, taking over some back of house space. I have no idea if that is on the lobby level, mezzanine or lower lobby. The other thing mentioned was that Larco is planning a residential tower as well, somewhere on the south side of the building.

Sad that what used to a grand railway hotel is becoming little more than a shopping mall.

You think having boutiques for Gucci, Dior, and Louis Vuitton make it less "grand"? I'd say it ups the grandness factor. And it is still the same grand hotel it was then. Retail shops have always been a part of hotels, I'm sure even in the early days they had their version of it. I would definitely not call Hotel Vancouver "nothing more than a shopping mall", seems very off base and ignores that it is still a great hotel, these stores don't cheapen that

.... and that sort of makes Vancouver look good in certain ways emulating a large city, or being a highly popular tourist city where those from abroad who can afford have a choice to shop at.

By the way, high-end boutiques have always been found inside many Canadian Grand Railway hotels. The brands just keep changing, that's all.

The only regret I have for Hotel Vancouver is that the St John's space should've remained as a restaurant. Miss those special occasions having Sunday buffets at the Griffins restaurant located there.

The first time I walked into the 'new' lobby I was just stunned at how cheap it all looked and how downgraded the experience of checking in became when people were herded into a back corner to stand at a counter that looked like something found in the Terrace BC airport.

It's not necessarily dead yet. I've used them myself as recently as the weekend and find the service is great.

I used to love this service but the quality has definitely slipped. Last order (a few days ago) rotten and near rotten produce and over an hour for delivery. They haven’t been able to maintain the 15 minute guarantee for months.

I think they’ll be done in 30 days especially with skip the dishes and others getting into this “ghost” grocery store business with way more access to delivery people.
